20th DECEMBER 2018
I HAVE TO DECLARE an interest, as Up & Running has been nominated in the 'Customer Service', ''National Retailer' & 'Online Retailer' categories...but apart from that, the annual independent Running Awards give you the chance to recognise your favourite races & events, running charities, products & many more. Doesn't cost anything other than a few minutes of your time!  [David Emanuel]

9th DECEMBER 2018
THANKS TO EVERYONE who attended the RRR Presentation Night at Royton Band Club & congratulations to all the prize-winners. Thanks also to Garry Bower for a great set of photos from the event. For those who weren't able to make it you can see a full list of this year's winners here. For those not able to collect their prizes on the night, they are now available to pick up from Up & Running Oldham - I'll send an email to each individual to confirm. Congratulations to Elaine Whitehead, who won free RRR membership for 2019-20. We announced that the RRR Charity of the Year for 2019 will be Springhill Hospice & we've already started planning fundraising events for next year. The lucky winners of the ballot for 2019 London Marathon places were Gail Shaw & Dave Watt, who I'm sure will love the VLM experience (if not the training). Finally, many thanks to all those involved in the organisation of another successful event! [David Emanuel]
5th DECEMBER 2018

THANKS TO EVERYONE who has bought tickets for the RRR Presentation Night on Saturday! Just to confirm that doors open at Royton Band Club on Sandy Lane (OL2 5QP) at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. We'll start as usual with presentation of awards followed by the draw for 2019 London Marathon places, then a hot buffet, raffle & disco, with the bar open until 11.45pm. We're changing the format of the raffle this year - to make life easier there will be donation envelopes on the tables, with each envelope representing an entry in the raffle. As this is our last fundraising event of the year for Maggie's & given the fabulous prizes that have been donated, we're respectfully asking for a £5 donation in each envelope - but you can put in more or less if you wish. See you on Saturday!  [David Emanuel]

22nd NOVEMBER 2018

IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR DIARY...the annual RRR Xmas Runs will take place on Monday 17th & Thursday 20th December this year. These short runs (taking in a few pub stops) are open to everybody, with Chrismas-related outfits very much encouraged!  [David Emanuel]

MEMBERS OF RRR ARE INVITED to participate in a research study by Charlotte Peers & Emily Schofield, currently running a project under the supervision of Dr Robert Vaughan in the School of Psychological & Social Sciences at York St John University. Before you decide whether you wish to take part, it is important you understand what the research is & what participation entails. It aims to investigate experience of mental health disorders in athletes & look at whether current methods of mental health measurement are appropriate to use within the athletic population. If you wish to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a short online questionnaire which should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary & all data collected will be kept confidential & anonymous. If you decide to participate, you will be able to withdraw at any point throughout the study &/or after completion by emailing members of the research team. The results will be analysed by the researchers & published as part of a BSc student dissertation. Please contact the research team by team by email if you require further information or wish to participate.  [David Emanuel]

8th NOVEMBER 2018

AS YOU'RE HOPEFULLY ALREADY aware, this year's RRR Presentation Night will take place on Saturday 8th December at Royton Band Club on Sandy Lane. Doors open at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. In addition to the presentation of trophies & awards, the evening will include a buffet, DJ & late bar. As usual a raffle will be held as our final fundraising effort for the 2018 Charity of the Year, Maggie's Oldham - you can donate raffle prizes to Club President June on a Monday night at the club, or drop them off anytime at Up & Running Oldham on Huddersfield Road. We'll also be making the draw for club places at next year's London Marathon - to be included in that draw please send your rejection e-mail or a copy of your rejection letter by e-mail to Brian Moore. Presentation Night tickets are priced at £12.50 per head - please click here to book yours!  [David Emanuel]

5th NOVEMBER 2018
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL RRRs who finished the club championship season in style at Derwentwater yesterday & indeed to all 127 club members who took part in 1 or more of this year's races. Following the survey of club members a few months ago, the structure of the 2019 Club Championship hasn't yet been decided - but when it comes to selection of races we'd like you to have your say! A slightly different approach this time - rather than ask you to just rate this year's race selection, we'd like you to let us know which races you would include if it was your choice. I've put together a (long) list of potential races, with 2019 dates where confirmed. Please send me an e-mail with your club championship race selection - assume for now that we're keeping it at 17 races - no later than Sunday 18th November. I've included all the races I could think of, but please feel free to suggest others if you wish!  [David Emanuel]

IT'S ALSO TIME TO HAVE your say on who will be presented with the Rod Bowers Trophy for Club Runner of the Year at our Presentation Night on 8th December. This award is based entirely on member votes, so please take part by completing this short form. That form also asks you to cast your vote for RRR Charity of the Year for 2019. Again, the deadline for voting is Sunday 18th November. [David Emanuel]
31st OCTOBER 2018
FURTHER TO THE announcement below, it has been confirmed that Brian Hurst's funeral will take place at 1pm on Thursday 8th November at Oldham Crematorium, the North Star at High Crompton afterwards.  [David Emanuel]

29th OCTOBER 2018
I AM SAD TO ANNOUNCE that former Royton Road Runner Brian Hurst has passed away. Brian was an active & popular member of our club for a number of years, completing races in club colours from 2007-2013 until he was forced to retire from running due to ill-health. He was also a regular volunteer at The Royton Trail. Further information regarding funeral arrangements will be provided when available.  [David Emanuel]

26th OCTOBER 2018
AS USUAL AT THIS TIME of year, we will soon be asking members for their views on which races you would like to see included in the 2019 club championship. However, since entries are open & the race is already filling fast, we have made an early decision that the Dewsbury 10K on Sunday 3rd February will again be the 1st club race of the year. Online entries are available here.  [David Emanuel]

23rd OCTOBER 2018
THIS SATURDAY I'M RUNNING the Snowdonia Marathon for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). I am pleased to announce that North Chadderton School will be hosting a CRY screening event in November 2019, where 100 14-35 yr olds will have an ECG (electrocardiogram) test. Having already secured 1 day of testing, let’s see if we can make it 2. Please donate using this link - all of our children should be screened.

Thank you for all your support.  [Vikki Smith]

20th OCTOBER 2018

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF FUNDRAISING for Maggie's Oldham is coming to and it's time to start the process of deciding what will be the RRR Charity of the Year for 2019. Ultimately this will be decided, as always, by a member vote - but first we need nominations for charities to be included on the voting list. If you'd like to propose a charity, please send me a brief e-mail by 4th November with the name of the charity & a couple of lines explaining why you think they deserve our support next year. Don't assume that someone else will suggest your favourite charity! All nominations will be included in the ballot  [David Emanuel]

BELATED CONGRATULATIONS TO Stewart Jones, who has been selected to represent Team GB at the World Transplant Games in 2019. The Games take place every 2 years & have in recent times been held in Australia, Sweden, South Africa, Argentina & Spain, so Stewart will no doubt be delighted to be heading for...Newcastle & Gateshead. Regardless of the venue, it's sure to be a great experience & a fantastic honour for RRR to be represented on the world stage!  [David Emanuel]

18th OCTOBER 2018
I AM PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE that Diane Allingan will be taking up the Assistant Treasurer position on the RRR committee - the position is to be filled on a temporary basis until the next AGM. As mentioned in the recent e-mail to members, I am glad to report that Mary Freer will be staying on as our club rep on the main Cricket Club Committee & will be continuing as an RRR member. I would like to place on record the thanks of everyone at RRR to Mary for going the extra mile for our club during the time she has been a member.  [Bryan Lawton]

16th OCTOBER 2018

THE COACH TO KESWICK for the Derwentwater 10 on 4th November is now full! Thanks to everyone who has booked their place. We have now started a 'wait list' in case anybody decides they are not able to travel - if you would like to be put on the list please complete this short form & we'll be in touch straight away if a place becomes available.  [David Emanuel]

11th OCTOBER 2018

OUR REPRESENTATIVE ON THE General Committee of the cricket club, Mary Freer, has provided an update from the latest committee meeting. Starting with some good news - the boiler has been fixed & the locks to the changing rooms are to be changed, with new keys issued accordingly. It's been mentioned here before, but PLEASE ensure that if you experience any problems/have complaints about the facilities that you log them in the book kept behind the bar in the cricket club - issues can only be resolved if those responsible are aware of them! On a separate note, can we please ensure that the heater is switched off after use - it would make sense for whoever is locking up after a training session to check that this has been done. Also on training nights, please ensure that you're not blocking the gates to the car park.  Finally, please note that any alcoholic raffle prizes given out at club events must be left behind the bar & collected when the winners leave!  [David Emanuel]

8th OCTOBER 2018
THE ANNOUNCEMENT YOU'VE all been waiting for...bookings are now being taken for seats on the RRR Fun Bus to Keswick for the final club road race of the year, the Derwentwater 10 on Sunday 4th November. The coach will be setting off from Radcliffe Street car park in Royton (OL2 6QL) at 8am sharp, returning from Keswick at 6pm. Please click here to book your seat(s) - cost is £10 per head. This one usually fills up quickly, so don't leave it too long!  [David Emanuel]
3rd OCTOBER 2018
IS ANYONE INTERESTED in putting together an RRR team for Endure 24 at Leeds on 29th & 30th June next year? Some of those who took part last year enjoyed it so much that they have already entered again, but I'm sure they'd welcome a challenge! The event is filling fast ('solo' & 'pairs' have already sold out) & entries before next Friday 12th October (using the code WINOCT on entry) will go into a prize draw for a pair of Mizuno Trail Shoes, Silva Trail Runner 3 Head Torch, SOS water bottle & box of hydration sachets for every team member. Teams can be anything from 3-8 people, cost of entry is £70 per person plus a 3% booking fee. For more details visit the event website.  [David Emanuel]
27th SEPTEMBER 2018
WE'VE BEEN CONTACTED by Lynn Westcott, who works for Jane Tomlinson's Run For All - they are organising this year's Yorkshire Marathon & 10K on Sunday 14th October. They are on the lookout for volunteers to work on race day (marshals on the route & helpers at the finish) & have suggested that family & friends of any RRRs taking part may want to get involved. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt & goody bag. If you're interested, or know anybody who might be, you can contact Lynn direct by e-mail.  [David Emanuel]

7th SEPTEMBER 2018
YOU DID A GREAT JOB raising money for Maggie's OIdham via the Summer Quiz & raffle...why not help even more by joining 'Maggie's Culture Crawl' on Friday 28th September? This sponsored walk promises "exclusive access to iconic venues & suprises along the way". There's £5 off if you use the discount code FRIENDSOLD5 at registration & a further £5 reduction if you sign up before midnight tonight! Full details on the website.  [David Emanuel]

2nd SEPTEMBER 2018
THANKS TO EVERYONE who supported the RRR Summer Quiz & Grand Raffle, whether by taking part on Friday evening or buying raffle tickets! There's still some money to come in, but we've so far raised close to £1,000 for Maggie's Oldham - a fantastic effort which we believe is the most ever raised by a single club event. The quiz was won, in some style, by Perfectly Formed (which, as you can see below right, they certainly were/are). To see a list of the winners of all the raffle prizes, click here - if you've won & weren't at the quiz we'll get your prize to you as soon as possible. Many thanks to Lady Presidentess June Allingan for hosting the quiz, organising the raffle & assembling such a fantastic set of prizes!  [David Emanuel]

SHANE READING & ROCHELLE EVANS didn't attend the quiz - but I think we'll let them off on this occasion. Many congratulations from everyone at the club on the birth of their son (& future RRR) Xander Philip, who arrived while we were about halfway through the raffle. Excellent timing by Xander, allowing his dad a couple of hours sleep before continuing his unbroken sequence of club races at Heaton Park with a 1st V40 finish!  [David Emanuel]
29th AUGUST 2018
IF YOU'VE RECEIVED a confusing e-mail from the organisers of Saturday's Heaton Park 10K, Martina Naismith has contacted them & received official confirmation that our race starts at 11am. In addition, "feel free to collect your race pack between 9:30 and 10:45". See you there!  [David Emanuel]

AT THE LAST FEW RRR committee meetings it has been raised that a number of runners are joining us on club training nights who are not paid up members of the club. When this happens it puts the club in a potentially difficult situation, as our England Athletics club insurance only covers affiliated members. It also puts us in a difficult situation with the Cricket Club, as technically non-members are using their facilities without contributing financially. The committee is fairly relaxed to runners new to the club running with us for a few initial runs, to see if it is for them, before signing up - what we cannot condone however is runners joining training nights week-in week-out who have no intention of officially joining us.  Please work with us as we strive to move the club forwards.  Thanks.  [Bryan Lawton, RRR Chairman]
22nd AUGUST 2018
WITH CHRISTMAS PARTIES already starting to be booked, this seems a good time to announce that the 2018 RRR Presentation Night will take place at Royton Band Club on Saturday 8th December. Timings, ticket prices, etc will be confirmed nearer the time. [David Emanuel]

20th AUGUST 2018
THE RRR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP has consisted of 16 or 17 races, with best 9 scores to count, pretty much every year since we formed in 2003 (bar the odd cancelled event). Is it time to make a change? We know that busy lives, work & family commitments make it difficult for some members to complete 9 races - plus we have more people than ever entering marathons, ultras, fell races & other events. In addition we want to give everyone the opportunity to get involved in relay events & cross-country leagues, which are difficult to fit into our already crowded schedule. If we were to reduce the number of club races, how far should we go? Best 8 to count from 15 races, 7 from 13, 6 from 11? Please let us know your views by clicking here.  [David Emanuel]

GREAT TO SEE a strong RRR turnout at Andy O'Sullivan's 35 Years of Races 5K on Sunday! Andy has more races coming up at Whitworth in September, including what he's announced as the final Ron Hill Birthday Race, celebrating Ron's 80th birthday, on Tuesday 25th September.  Before that, on Thursday 13th September, Andy is putting on the David Emanuel Cowm 5K Trail Race. It feels a bit odd promoting a race with my name attached to it, but Andy has recently agreed that some of the proceeds will go to Springhill Hospice, so it'd be good have a big turnout.  [David Emanuel]

8th AUGUST 2018
THIS YEAR's NWC ROAD RELAYS take place at Delamere Forest on Saturday 8th September. Teams of 3 women & 4 men will each run legs of 6.2K. This is our last chance to take part in a relay event this year. It's on a 'free' weekend between the Club Championship races at Heaton Park (2nd September) & Warrington (16th September). Relays are open to all '1st claim' RRR members & provide a great opportunity to run as part of a team. We pride ourselves on taking big squads to these events & we always aim to put people into teams of similar ability. Last time we ran in the NWC Relays - in 2016, also at Delamere Forest - we took 8 teams in total (28 athletes). We don't have long to decide whether to take part this year - entries close on 2nd September!  If we do sign up, the cost of entry (£5 per head) will be met from club funds. If there's sufficient interest we'll look at the possibility of booking a coach. If you're interested in running for RRR, please let me know within the next week.  [David Emanuel]
1st AUGUST 2018
FOLLOWING THE CANCELLATION of the Summer Ball & after investigating various other options, we can now announce that an RRR Summer Quiz Night & Grand Raffle will take place on Friday 31st August at Royton Cricket Club in aid of the RRR Charity of the Year for 2018, Maggie's Cancer Day Care Centre - 7.30pm for an 8pm start. The Quiz Night costs just £3 per head which includes entry to the quiz, stand up bingo & lucky number ticket (no supper this time). Please bring a team (maximum 6 people - non-RRR members very welcome) or just come along & join up with others on the night! The Grand Raffle draw will be made at the quiz, but tickets are available now. At £5 each (3 for £12) they can be purchased at Monday & Thursday training nights from any member of the committee or from Up & Running Oldham on Huddersfield Road. Alternatively, if you want to buy a ticket but can't do so in person, please just send an e-mail & we'll sort it out. Some really fanastic prizes have been donated including a £300 Hugo Boss watch, a Polar sports watch worth £140, Lanson champage & chocolates, 6 bottles of wine, a £30 voucher to spend at The Saddleworth Boutique, meal vouchers for the Morning Star in Shaw, Old Bell Inn in Delph & Junction Inn in Denshaw, plus many more. You don't need to attend the quiz to join in the raffle - please support our fundraising efforts!  [June Allingan]

APPLICATIONS FOR 'Good for Age' entry to the 2019 London Marathon can be submitted from today! If you have a qualifying time, you have until 5pm on Friday 10th August to apply for a place. Click here to check the qualifying time for your age group & submit an application. Please note that this year, for the 1st time, a qualifying time DOES NOT guarantee a place in the race - however all applicants will be advised on 15th August whether they have been successful.  [David Emanuel]

15th JULY 2018
ARE YOU PLANNING to run the Riverside 10 on Sunday 5th August? We will once again be taking a coach to Lancaster for this race - leaving Royton at 8.30am, returning from Lancaster at 6pm, cost is £10 per head. Please click here to book your place(s) on the coach - the form includes the usual instructions for payment into the RRR account. The Lancaster trip is always a good day out, not least because it includes a trip to a not-secret-at-all secret beer garden. Don't miss out! [David Emanuel]
10th JULY 2018
AN OPPORTUNITY! VOLUNTEERS ARE required to support the Royton Road Runners RunTogether sessions. Ideally we need people who can support a group on most Mondays from 5.45pm to 6.45pm, before the usual club training run. If you are interested, please send me an e-mail or speak to me at the club as soon as possible.  [Simon Howard]
23rd JUNE 2018
A WARM WELCOME TO the new RRR Press Officer, Gary Smith. As well as writing race reports for the website, Gary will be submitting regular reports & articles to the local press - if you have an interesting story to tell, please get in touch with Gary via the contact details on this page. Many thanks to Elliot Stone for his valuable contributions during his Press Officer stint!  [David Emanuel]

14th JUNE 2018
SORRY TO HAVE TO ANNOUNCE that the RRR Summer Ball, scheduled for next month, has been cancelled. Unfortunately the take-up of tickets was a long way short of the numbers needed to make the event viable. I've written separately to all those who had booked to arrange refunds. We're now planning an alternative 15th anniversary charity/fundraising event, on a smaller scale, later in the year. Watch this space for further details!  [David Emanuel]

9th JUNE 2018
THIS WEEK'S E-MAIL newsletter highlighted Tuesday's Brian Leathey Memorial 5K on 12th June - but showed the original (Cowm) venue. Please note that this race has been relocated to Brownhouse Reservoir, with registration at the Red Lion in Whitworth. Further details & online entry here. There will also be the cheque presentation to the Victoria Breast Care Unit before the race.  [David Emanuel]

7th JUNE 2018
MEMBERSHIP BOOKLETS FOR 2017-18 are now available. Simon Howard will be giving them out at training nights over the next few weeks, after which you'll be able to collect from Up & Running Oldham on Huddersfield Road.  [David Emanuel]

5th JUNE 2018
AS I'M SURE MANY of you are already aware, Andy O'Sullivan is marking an incredible 35 years of organising races with a 5K around Cowm Reservoir (of course!) on Sunday 19th August. Entries are limited to 300 & it's sure to be well-attended, so if you want to be join the celebrations it's probably best to get your entry in as soon as possible. [David Emanuel]

31st MAY 2018
IF YOU'RE HAVING any problems applying the RRR coupon code for next weekend's Tatton 10K, please enter at the full price & let me know by e-mail. I'll then arrange for the race organisers to credit your account with the agreed £2 discount.  [David Emanuel]

25th MAY 2018
ENGLAND ATHLETICS HAS launched a new partnership with DW Fitness First, now their the lead partner for RunTogether. Starting at 6.30pm, the evening will include a Q&A plus the opportunity for a group run with Jenny. You can book your place here.  [David Emanuel]
12th MAY 2018
ANDY O'SULLIVAN HAS been in touch to advise that the Ron Hill Birthday 5K at Cowm Reservoir on Tuesday 25th September is filling up fast. This is apparently going to be the very last Ron Hill 5K - so if you want to take part & help celebrate the great man's 80th birthday, you should get your entry in soon!  [David Emanuel]
1st MAY 2018
FOR THOSE HEADING for the Hollingworth Lake 5K on Wednesday, don't forget there's a change of venue from the old Littleborough race! Registration is at Littleborough RUFC on Rakewood Road (OL15 0AP) from 5.30pm & closes 15 minutes before the 7.30pm race start. Parking should be a bit easier!  [David Emanuel]

Just in case anyone missed it on Facebook - RRR has a new world record holder amongst its members! Julie Greenwood set a new world best time for running a marathon dressed as a fairy tale character, surviving one of the hottest London races in years dressed as Princess Belle from Beauty & The Beast (right) to cross the line in 4:24:07, beating the previous record by less than a minute. Julie was raising funds for Clic Sargent & you can still contribute to the cause here.  [David Emanuel]

21st APRIL 2018

JUST IN CASE YOU haven't seen the announcement already...the ballot for next year's London Marathon opens next Monday 30th April. It's only open for 5 days, so don't think about it for too long! The 2019 race takes place on 28th April.  [David Emanuel]

20th APRIL 2018

SUMMER BALL TICKETS are now on sale! As announced last month, we'll be celebrating the club's 15th anniversary with this event at Boundary Park the weekend before The Royton Trail in aid of Maggie's Oldham, our Charity of the Year

19th APRIL 2018
THE RRR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP resumes early next month with the new Hollingworth Lake 5K series. For those who are new to the's entirely up to you how many of the 4 races in the series you choose to (or are able to) run. Club championship points are calculated on your BEST time - so if you only run once, you'd better make it a good one! However often you plan to run, it is (as usual) cheaper to pre-enter online. Make sure you enter as an RRR to get an additional discount! If you enter the series you get to keep the same number throughout, which speeds things up on race night, plus you have the chance to run in a free handicap race on the last Wednesday in May. Admittedly this is the day after the Bernadette Flynn Cowm Reservoir race - but I'm sure most RRRs are more than capable of running back-to-back 5K races...  [David Emanuel]

12th APRIL 2018
DO YOU HAVE a couple of hours to spare over the weekend of 21st-22nd April? Not if you're running the London Marathon, obviously, but that's only about half the club! Maggie's Oldham, the RRR Charity of the Year for 2018, is seeking a small team of litter pickers to help clear the grounds. If you'd like to help - at a time to suit you - please let me know.  [David Emanuel]

16th MARCH 2018
YOU MAY ALREADY BE aware of the severe damage to the home changing room/portacabin at Royton Cricket Club, due to a combination of burst pipes & a leak in the roof. The club have reported that they will have to wait to find out the full extent of the water damage & cost of repair. If you have any expertise & are able to offer any advice or help please e-mail Bernard Wade or contact Guy Sedgwick/Tony Spence at the club.  [David Emanuel]

1st MARCH 2018
I'M PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE that on Saturday 7th July 2018 we will be holding an RRR Summer Ball to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the club. The event will take place at Oldham Event Centre (Latics), starting at 7.30pm for 8pm with a champagne reception followed by a 3-course evening dinner & disco, raffle  & charity auction. Tickets will cost £35 with proceeds going to Maggie's, the RRR Charity of the Year. Tickets will go on sale soon, with the option to buy individually or book a table of 8-10 people for anyone wishing to come as a group. Watch this space!  [June Allingan]
28th FEBRUARY 2018
IF YOU ENJOYED LAST WEEKEND'S trip to Wrexham/Chester - or didn't go & wish you had - you won't want to miss out on our annual trip to Cumbria for the Dentdale Run. Bookings are now being taken for seats on the RRR coach on Saturday 10th March. The fun bus will be setting off from Radcliffe Street car park in Royton (OL2 6QL) at 9am sharp (race starts at 1pm), again costing just £10 per head. The plan is to return to Royton for around 8.15-8.30pm, after making our usual substantial contribution to the Dent village economy. Although the 14.2 mile event is the Club Championship race, I know some RRRs are planning to run the 7.9-miler instead. Please click here to book your seat(s) - this one is likely to fill up quickly, so don't leave it too long! You'll also need to book your place in the race sooner rather than later - as I write there are just 80 of 700 places remaining.  [David Emanuel]

SORRY TO ANNOUNCE THAT due to the Beast From The East, current conditions & forecast, the RRR committee has decided that in the interest of runner safety this week's Thursday (1st March) club session has been cancelled.  [Bryan Lawton]

The draw was made before training at the club tonight, with the following 8 names picked out of the hat: Alex Critcher, Jon Crooks, Simon Howard, Janet Jobey, Matt Kilburn, Rob Nixon, Michael Pickering & John Sweeney. We also picked 2 others in case anyone drops out - Val Kilburn (1st reserve) & Andrew Chadwick (2nd reserve). If any of you are no longer able to take part, please let me know as soon as possible.  [David Emanuel]

11th FEBRUARY 2018
THANKS TO EVERYONE who supported our annual RRR Quiz Night at the cricket club on Friday, not least Lady Presidentess June Allingan who stepped in to write the questions & host the event! An entertaining evening raised £245 for our Charity of the Year, Maggie's Cancer Care Day Centre - it was great to have a team from Maggie's taking part on the night. The quiz was won in style by Colin Green's Parkrunners & Sons team, who just edged out Real Ale Madrid (Jason Keast, Simon Howard, Gary Smith, Bernadette Ball & Bryan Lawton), with Must Tri Harder, our friends from Rochdale Tri Club, coming in 3rd. We'll be announcing further fundraising events throughout the year & we're also in discussions with Maggie's about providing more practical help, spending a day working on the gardens at the Day Centre. If you have any fundraising ideas, or are planning your own individual fundraising activity for Maggie's, please let me know.  [David Emanuel]
MARY FREER, THE NEW RRR representative on the Royton Cricket Club General Committee, attended her 1st meeting this week. She reports that members of the committee are keen to help with any issues we have (don't forget that there's a book behind the bar for any items of repair to be recorded). There was an acknowledgement that the gate is difficult to lock/unlock & they will be looking at this with a view to making access easier. The condition of the car park is under review, with a quote having been obtained for resurfacing (£40,000) & another quote awaited for repair to a retaining wall. Meanwhile we were thanked for our contribution to the new, improved outside lighting.  [David Emanuel]

PROVISIONAL GROUP TABLES for the 2018 RRR Club Championship are now available - please click here to see which group you have been allocated to. Positions have been decided based on best race & parkrun performances in 2017 (not just club races) against threshold times which can be seen on this page - the aim is to have everyone competing for trophies against runners of a broadly similar standard. The groups currently look quite uneven in size but it won't necessarily stay that way - some of those listed will not take part in club races this year, while new members & those who didn't complete a 'standard distance' event in 2017 will be added to an appropriate group after their 1st few club races of this year. If you believe you have not been put in the right group, please let me know as soon as possible.  [David Emanuel]

MANY APOLOGIES that it wasn't possible to publish details of the groups for the 2018 Club Championship before the 1st race at Dewsbury. I will make them available as soon as I receive the information.  [David Emanuel]

1st FEBRUARY 2018

taken for seats on the RRR coach to Wrexham for the 1st club trip of the year to the Village Bakery Half Marathon on Sunday 25th February. The fun bus will be setting off from Radcliffe Street car park in Royton (OL2 6QL) at 8am sharp (race starts at 11am), cost £10 per head. Since the start/finish is on a rather uninspiring industrial estate, our plan is to leave Wrexham after the race for a stop-off in Chester for a bite to eat & a quiet drink or several, returning to Royton for around 8pm. Please click here to book your seat(s) - it's likely to fill up quickly, so don't leave it too long!  [David Emanuel]

31st JANUARY 2018

THE STROKE ASSOCATION has been in touch to tell us about this year's Resolution Run Manchester which takes place in Heaton Park on 4th March 2018 (conveniently on the weekend between the Wrexham Half Marathon & Dentdale Run). You can run 5K, 10K or 15K - advance entry via the link above costs £16 which includes a technical T-shirt, training plan & medal. They are also looking for volunteer course marshals - if you are interested or would like more information please contact Sian Thomas in the fundraising team, either by e-mail or phone (07515596987 or 0161742 7485).  [David Emanuel]

MANY THANKS TO all RRRs who attended our Annual General Meeting last Friday. Following the recent announcement that Mark Taylor has decided to step down from the committee, Jenny O'Callaghan was voted in as the new Treasurer - on behalf of all members I'd like to thank Jenny for taking on this role. It was also announced that Mary Freer will in future be representing RRR on the General Committee of the Cricket Club, giving us a voice at this forum that we haven't had for a while. Attendees voted in favour of an increase of £1 in the annual RRR membership fee for 2018-19 to £45, reflecting the latest increase in England Athletics fees. However this is subject to confirmation that the cost of cricket club membership remians unchanged at £25 - discussions are taking place & this will be confirmed before fees become due at the end of March. There was some discussion about the fit of the ladies club vest - Emma Bower has kindly offered to collate feedback from members with a view to providing Bryan Lawton with something to take to our kit suppliers & an email has been sent to all of our current female members today. Finally, Shane Reading is assisting Brian Moore with the analysis of 2017 race performances to enable the Club Championship Groups to be announced before Sunday's 1st race at Dewsbury.  [David Emanuel]

7th JANUARY 2018

IT'S THAT TIME of year again...Saturday 27th January has been chosen as the date for our latest RRR parkrun day. This was started a few years ago to introduce more club members to parkrun, but that hardly seems necessary now! Instead we're using the event to launch the 2018 RRR Cup, with the First Round draw taking place in the Boathouse Cafe, Alexandra Park immediately after Oldham parkrun. To enter this year's club knockout competition & be included in that draw just send me an e-mail. For this year's RRR parkrun day we're planning a 'club takeover' of Oldham parkrun - that is, we want RRR members to fill all of the volunteer roles. We'll also have an RRR pacing team out in force. Please help us make this happen! You can view the volunteer roles available on 27th January here & put your name forward by sending an e-mail to If you want to join the pacing team please let me know by e-mail or by replying to my post on the RRR Facebook page.  [David Emanuel]

A NUMBER OF ISSUES raised by RRR were discussed at a General Committee meeting of Royton Cricket Club recently & several actions agreed - including additional lighting in the car park. In relation to any issues with the changing rooms, etc please note that there is a book behind the bar for items of repair to be noted - this is actioned weekly. Please ask the bar staff for this book as required. Please can we also ensure, when gathering on club nights, that we allow sufficient room for cars to enter the car park. [David Emanuel]

4th JANUARY 2018

FURTHER TO THE anouncement last year, Simon Howard will be starting new structured training sessions on Thursday 11th January, with the plan to hold them every fortnight from then onwards (alongside the existing group runs). Starting with a hill session, these are designed to be accessible to all runners regardless of your speed or which group you currently run with. A number of members have requested this type of training, so please support this new initiative!  [David Emanuel]

2nd JANUARY 2018

HAPPY NEW YEARRR! 2017 was another great year for the club & this year promises to be even better. We're straight into competition with involvement for the 1st time in the Greater Manchester Cross-Country Championships at Heaton Park on Saturday 6th January. If you've not signed up to run you could pop along to cheer on our teams - the Senior Ladies set off at 1.15pm, followed by the Senior Men at 2pm. I'm sure they'd be very grateful for your support! We also have some exciting new races in the 2018 club championship, including the Village Bakery Half Marathon in February & two new 10Ks in June. If you've signed up for a marathon, ultra or triathlon in 2018 please let me know so that I can add it to the page on the website - this will also ensure that you appear in the end-of-season tables!  [David Emanuel]
