VILLAGE BAKERY WREXHAM HALF MARATHON - Sunday 25th February
Many thanks to all members who took the time to vote on the 2017 races
& suggest alternative races for inclusion in our 2018 race calendar. For those interested in such things, the attached file shows the average ratings for each of this year's races, the number of
RRRs who took part in each race & the year-on-year trend in race
As you will see, the least popular races from the vote - the Fleetwood & Oulton Park Half Marathons - have been replaced, along with the Milltown 7K & 10K which were not (at the time) scheduled to take place in 2018. Only 8 races have been retained from 2017.
In putting together this race list the committee debated long & hard, taking into account factors such as member suggestions, the timing of races (in particular trying to avoid longer races on successive weekends), support for events hosted by other local clubs, cost of entry & distance to travel. This ruled out proposals such as the Wilmslow Half Marathon (weekend after Dentdale), Southport Half Marathon (2 days before the Rochdale 10K) & Stockport 10 (too late in the year). Whilst we know that we can never please everybody, we hope that all members will find enough options here to complete at least 9 races & hopefully more.
Of the races we've added, the Hopwood Trot is a brand new 5.5 mile multi-terrain race organised by Middleton Harriers, to take place at Hopwood College. The Hollingworth Lake 5Ks replace the Littleborough 5K series & are concentrated in 1 month rather than spread across a 3-month period. This means that 1 of the races is the day before the Ian Casey 5K, but since the best time from the 4 races counts this hopefully won't be a problem. With the inclusion of the Cowm race at the end of the month (which many of you will already be aware of), May is a very 5K-heavy month...a good chance for those running April marathons to get some speed back in the legs!
POSTSCRIPT: as you may have noticed, we reluctantly decided not to include the Mossley 10K in next year's championship. The race is scheduled for 15th July - with The Royton Trail moved to Thursday 12th July in 2018 (in case by some miracle England progress to the World Cup semi-final on the Wednesday), we felt that this allows insufficient recovery time. Some RRRs will no doubt still decide to 'do the double' & run at Mossley, which continues to be a popular race amongst our members. We hope to be able to reinstate it in the future.
