29th DECEMBER 2016
THE COMMITTEE HAS been contacted by Sports Physio UK in Shaw to advise that, with effect from 1st January 2017, they will no longer offer a discount to RRR members. Any appointments already made will be honoured at the discounted price, but new bookings from 1st January will be charged at their standard rate.  [David Emanuel]

24th DECEMBER 2016

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS to all RRRs! Enjoy your running over the festive season. Hope that you find plenty of new kit under the tree tomorrow!

[David Emanuel]

18th DECEMBER 2016
THANKS TO EVERYONE who supported our end-of-season presentation do last night, especially the background workers Dave E, Brian, Bernie, Neil F, Mary & June, as well as our chief photographer, raffle ticket & quiz question sellers! Another great turnout from the club with approximately £300 raised for Dr Kershaw's Hospice. I think we will even get our 'no damage' deposit back for the room, success!  [Bryan Lawton]
12th DECEMBER 2016
AS A RESULT OF OTHER commitments of our existing volunteers, we're looking for members who would be prepared to give up one night per week to run a beginners running group. If this is something that would of interest, please send an e-mail & further details will be provided.  [David Emanuel]

8th DECEMBER 2016
GEORGE MEYNELL IS IN possession of a large number of Royton Cricket Club membership cards for RRR members. If you haven't yet collected yours, please see George at the club.  [David Emanuel]

4th DECEMBER 2016

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED! Brian Schofield from Oldham & Royton Harriers is seeking additional marshalls for the South East Lancs cross-country race at Tandle Hills next Saturday afternoon December 10th. If you're not planning to run & are available to help, please contact Brian directly on 0160-6209556 or by e-mail.  [David Emanuel]
26th NOVEMBER 2016
LADIES & GENTS, it is that time again when the club dig out their Christmas running costumes & head off to a couple of watering holes in Royton. As usual we will be doing 2 runs on Monday 5th & Thursday 8th December, starting at our normal time of 7:00pm. To participate just come along dressed up as a Xmas tree, Santa, elf, fairy or your own Christmas-themed take. We will run as a pack up to the Halfway House in Royton & sample a small tipple, then off to the Puckersley for a further drink. Please bring your cameras along as the night is always guaranteed to be fun. All group members & their friends will be most welcome.  [Ronnie Quinn]
22nd NOVEMBER 2016
TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE for the RRR Presentation Night! As you must know by now, the social event of the year takes place on Saturday 17th December at Royton Band Club, Sandy Lane. All the fun starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £12.50 (which includes buffet) & can be purchased by online transfer to Sort Code 01-06-08, Account Number 43550592. Please include your name as the reference. Deadline to pay is 10th December, to help with catering. There is no option for payment on the night, but Bernie Goodwin says that he will accept cash (only) on club nights "for the few that haven't joined the 21st century yet". It promises to be a great night as always!  [David Emanuel]
15th NOVEMBER 2016
MANY OF YOU will probably know this if you've run with me on a regular basis, but I took up running a few years ago as therapy after the tragic death of my stepson Aaron. He died from SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). Next May would have been his 30th birthday, so I wanted to do something to raise funds for SUDEP Action. I have been in conversation with Ronnie Quinn about this for a while & was hoping the club may be able to help in some way. I am pleased to announce that next year on Tuesday May 23rd (which would have been 3 days before his birthday) there will be the Aaron Ashforth Memorial Race at Cowm Reservoir. I must give a big thanks to Andy O'Sullivan for helping organise this. I'm also planning a slightly longer run to raise funds as well. I'm hoping plenty of RRRs will join me for this race. It is a few days before a big racing weekend with Liverpool RNR, Edinburgh Marathon & Manchester Half but 5K will be a good warm up.  [Simon Howard]
10th NOVEMBER 2016
AS YOU MAY HAVE SEEN in the news, an incident on Tuesday resulted in the tragic deaths of two talented young athletes from Aldershot, Farnham & District Athletic Club. I've sent a message of condolence on behalf of RRR to express our sympathy to their families, friends & club colleagues. An incident such as this is a reminder of the risks that we face when out running, particularly at this time of year. Please ensure that you do all you can to minimise these risks by avoiding dangerous roads & wearing suitable reflective clothing to make yourself clearly visible to traffic.  [David Emanuel]

7th NOVEMBER 2016

WITH THE 2016 road race season now over, it's time to have your say on one of the most prestigious trophies to be presented at the RRR Presentation Night on 17th December. The Rod Bowers Trophy for RRR Club Runner of the Year is presented to the person that members believe has made the greatest contribution to the club in the last 12 months. That's not necessarily the 'best' or the fastest runner, but the person you believe has made the best overall contribution to RRR. Given our growing membership, none of us know every club member - but this is a personal vote, based on the people you know through training, races, parkrun, social events, Facebook, etc. Every vote is important, it's almost always close, so please have your say! Deadline for submitting your vote is Sunday 20th November. Please click here for the online voting form. On the same form you will be asked to select your preference for the club 'Charity of the Year' for 2017 - the charity to which donations will be made from any club fundraising activity throughout next year. Lots of different nominations from members this year - The Running Charity, Chron's & Colitis UK, Cardiac Risk in the Young, Huntington's Disease Association, Mesothelioma UK, MIND, Rethink, The Pituarity Foundation, The Christie & Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Reasons for nomination of each charity (plus links to their websites) can be found alongside the voting form at the link above. All responses are completely confidential - no RRR member will know how you cast your votes!

But that's not all. We'd also like you to tell the RRR Committee how you rated this season's club races & which other event(s) you'd like to see included in the 2017 RRR Club Championship. Click here for a separate form which asks you to give a rating to each race. You don't need to score every race, but feel free to give a rating even if you didn't take part (you may have been a spectator or taken part in a previous year, for example). Then, if you wish, tell us of other favourite events that you'd like to be considered for next year's race list. Deadline for responses is again Sunday 20th November.

We look forward to hearing your views! If you have any questions or are having difficulty accessing or completing the forms, please let me know.  [David Emanuel]

2nd NOVEMBER 2016

We'll be having a collection for Oldham Foodbank again this year. If you have any donations, from the list below, please bring them to the club on Monday November 14th, Thursday November 17th or to the Kingsway track session on Weds 16th November. Items they are in need of are:

Chocolate Advent calendars & selection boxes are also donated at this time of year.  [Mary Freer]

31st OCTOBER 2016
AS MOST OF YOU KNOW the RRR committee decided soon after last year's race that the Mad Dog 10K would not be the first race in our club championship for 2017 (which was just as well as it filled up in about 3 days). Following our last committee meeting we have decided that the Dewsbury 10K will return as the inaugural race of the 2017 season. As a bit of background, Dewsbury was our 'first race of the season' from 2004 to 2011. It's a flat, fast 10K, ideal for a PB run. It also sells out before the day of the race. You can enter here!  [Brian Moore]
29th OCTOBER 2016
WITH THE LAST club championship race of the year taking place at Keswick next weekend, we'll soon be asking all members to vote on various issues ahead of Presentation Night on 17th December & the selection of club races for 2017. Included in this will be the chance to select your preference for the club 'charity 0f the year' for 2017 - the charity to which donations will be made from any club fundraising activity throughout next year (Dr Kershaw's Hospice has benefited this year from events such as our Quiz Night & the penalty shoot-out competition at RRR parkrun day). First, however, we need nominations for charities to be included on the voting list. If you'd like to propose a charity, please send me a brief e-mail by 6th November with the name of the charity & a couple of lines explaining why you think they deserve our support in 2017. All nominations will be included in the ballot!  [David Emanuel]

TALKING OF THE TRIP to if the prospect of travelling to the Lake District with a coachload of your fellow RRRs wasn't already exciting enough, the destination of a number of end-of-season prizes are still to be decided by performances in the jaunt around Derwentwater. Perhaps the closest of all is Group 3, where Mark Brynes can still beat Michael Wildbore to the title & Janet Jobey, Val Kilburn & Adrian Marshall are all in the running (excuse the pun) for 2nd & 3rd places. The Championship is also tight, with Kirsty White, Bryan Lawton, Jarrod Gritt & Dave Hall each with a chance of finishing 3rd behind Michael Fleming & Brad Howard. Eamonn Nolan has already sewn up Group 1, but Elliot Stone & Matt Kershaw can both still finish 2nd & Matt Kilburn could finish 3rd if results fall his way. The winners of Group 4 & Group 6 will be decided in head-to-head races between Nick Mallon/Paul Cooke & Jenny O'Callaghan/Anne Jones respectively, as they currently sit level on points at the top. It's also a straight fight between Ronnie Quinn & John Higgins for 3rd place in Group 2, the same in Group 4 between Vikki Smith & Selina McLean, likewise in Group 5 between Stephen Jones & Chloe Clegg. Most of the age category prizes have already been decided, but there's a great battle in prospect between Shane Reading & Chris Lowe to decide who wins the V40s, while Dave Phillips can pip Stephen Jones for the 3rd V60 prize if he runs. Plenty to look forward to!  [David Emanuel]

23rd OCTOBER 2016

TO ALL WHO WON a shield or trophy at last year's Presentation Night - I need them returned to me, either dropped off at the club or my house BEFORE Derwenwater please. I have a lot to sort out & need to do this before my jollies!! Many thanks.  [Bernie Goodwin]
21st OCTOBER 2016
I KNOW THAT some of you are planning to run the Saddleworth Santa Dash on 3rd December...but for those RRRs who can't make that date (mostly because they will be enduring the hell-on-earth that is the Marl Pits cross-country course) here's another opportunity to dress up as Father (or Mother) Christmas. The Santa Dash or Dawdle around Hollingworth Lake, in aid of Springhill Hospice, takes place on Sunday 11th December at 11am. For further details & registration visit the Springhill Hospice website.  [David Emanuel]

19th OCTOBER 2016
I'VE HAD A MESSAGE from the organiser of the Derwentwater 10 that another 30 places have been made available on Bookitzone. I'd act quickly if you haven't already booked your place!  [Bryan Lawton]

12th OCTOBER 2016

IF YOU ARE one of the unlucky RRRs who has received a London Marathon rejection letter or e-mail, all is not yet lost! As many of you know, the club will receive a couple of places which will be allocated via a ballot at Presentation Night in December. In order to be included in the ballot please keep that letter or e-mail somewhere safe, rather than setting it ablaze in a fit of despair, & make sure you get it to Brian Moore before December!  [David Emanuel]
9th OCTOBER 2016
BOOKINGS ARE NOW BEING taken for the end-of-season coach trip to Keswick for the Derwentwater 10 on Sunday 6th November. To claim your place please transfer £13 per seat to Sort Code 01-06-08, Account Number 43550592 before 31st October. Please include your name as the reference. The coach will leave Royton at 8am, returning from Keswick at 6pm to be back for around 8-8.30. Don't forget to book your place in the race too - it's online entry only & over 300 of the 430 places have already been filled!  [David Emanuel]

3rd OCTOBER 2016
AS YOU MAY have already seen, entries are closed for the 2017 Mad Dog 10K - the race was full within 48 hours. We'd already announced earlier this year that we were looking at an alternative opening race for 2017 - a message that has been reiterated recently on our Facebook page - which is now looking like a wise decision! We'll announce the replacement race as soon as we've concluded discussions with the Race Director - watch this space!  [David Emanuel]

29th SEPTEMBER 2016

THE PRESENTATION EVENING for this year's Run The Moors Grand Prix series takes place at Bamford Bowling Club on Friday 25th November. The entertainment starts at 7.30pm, with tickets priced at a bargain £6 which includes a pie-&-pea supper, guest speaker & the chance to cheer like crazy as our very own Kirsty White collects the overall Ladies Champion trophy. If you'd like a ticket please let me know as soon as possible.  [David Emanuel]

27th SEPTEMBER 2016

A FINAL REMINDER...if you want to be part of the RRR pre-entry for this winter's cross-country races, you've got 3 more days to submit the form & make your payment! All the details can be found here. You can still take part if you miss this deadline - it only costs an extra £1 to enter on the day - but it's a lot easier this way & your number will be ready & waiting for you when you arrive at your 1st race (although please bring your own safety pins!).  [David Emanuel]
8th SEPTEMBER 2016
IF YOU'VE ENTERED this year's Chester Marathon (or Metric Marathon) on 2nd October, or took part last year, you may have received an e-mail about Club Corner. This was a great new feature introduced last year, providing 'VIP treatment' to members of the clubs with most entrants. This includes a designated space near the start/finish line for our gazebo (for use by runners & supporters), access to 'dedicated toilets' (there's nothing better than a dedicated toilet!) & complimentary pre-race nutrition (water, energy gels, isotonic drinks). Apparently we already have 17 entrants across the 2 races & I'm sure there are more RRRs thinking of entering. If you are heading to Chester please let me know if you'd like to be part of our team in Club Corner; we also need a volunteer to transport & take charge of the RRR gazebo on the day!  [David Emanuel]
28th AUGUST 2016

that if you're not planning to run the Rochdale Half Marathon on 25th September, Cannonball Events are looking for marshals & have an offer which may be of interest. In general the marshal points will range from 2-3.5 hours in duration. In return for your services you will get a race T-shirt & free race entry either this year (to pass onto a friend) or next year, or alternatively a £25 voucher that can be redeemed at another Cannonball race. If this appeals to you, please contact John Lloyd at Cannonball Events & he'll give you more information.  [David Emanuel]

SPORTS TOURS INTERNATIONAL have been in touch with details of a special offer on one of their local 10Ks. The Merseyside 10K takes place on Sunday 2nd October & 'early bird' entry at £13 closes at midnight tonight. Click here for details - but don't leave it too long!  [David Emanuel]

2nd AUGUST 2016

WE'VE BEEN CONTACTED by the gent below, reading will explain all... [Brian Moore]

"My name is Gary Woods & I am undertaking a Masters in Sport & Exercise Psychology within the Ulster University. I would be grateful if male runners aged 18 years & over would consider completing the questionnaire available at this link. I am investigating exercise dependence & attempting to identify factors associated with it (if present). Further details of the study are available within the questionnaire’s opening pages. Many thanks in advance for your time, should you be able to participate."

FINAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR the coach trip to Lancaster on Sunday 7th August for the Riverside 10 - we'll be leaving from the car park on Radcliffe Street, by Mazzo Italian restaurant (OL2 6QL) at 8.30am sharp. The race starts at 11am. The race is hosted by the George & Dragon pub, which might just have food & drink on offer after the run. The plan is to head for home at around 5pm, getting back to Royton for 6-6.30pm.  For those who haven't spotted Bernie Goodwin's message on the RRR Facebook page, cost is £10 per seat which can be paid now to Sort Code 01-06-08, Account Number 43550592.  [David Emanuel]

WORRIED ABOUT THE BIG GAP between the Riverside 10 on Sunday & the Middleton 10K on 4th September? Wondering what on earth you can do on those long August weekends? Well the Cannonball Three Day Event at Shore might help a little. Starting on the evening of Friday 12th August, the series consists of a 7K road race, a 4.55 mile trail race & a 3 mile fell race, set on the roads, tracks & hills above Littleborough. With the trail race on Saturday not starting until 1pm you could even fit in a parkrun beforehand! As a 'veteran' of the 2014 & 2015 events I can thoroughly recommend it.  [David Emanuel]

30th JULY 2016
THERE HAVE BEEN MANY great 'days' in human history - VE Day (8th May 1945), actor Daniel Day-Lewis, Yesterday (by The Beatles), Groundhog Day (film starring Bill Murray, Groundhog Day (film starring Bill Murray - see what I did there?), Day of the Jackal (novel by Frederick Forsyth) & TV's Darren Day, to name but a few - but now we have to add RRR parkrun day 2016 to the list. Thanks to everyone who supported today's event at Alexandra Park, whether helping out, running in a football shirt or taking part in the penalty shoot-out. We didn't quite beat the Oldham parkrun attendance record, but did collect £92 for Dr Kershaw's Hospice, not bad going at all. Jason Keast (below left) had the best guess at the number of chocolates in the jar (264 if you were wondering). There were slightly fewer once Nefa Nessa (below middle) got her hands on the jar...

After 7 penalty-takers scored with all 3 of their initial efforts, Sam O'Callaghan (below right) remained faultless from the spot to win a hard-fought shoot-out which went to several rounds of sudden-death, Kirsty White displaying some impressive goalkeeping skills. Thanks again everyone!  [David Emanuel]
26th JULY 2016
JUST WANT TO LET all RRRs know that the funeral of Michael Allingan will take place at 1pm this Friday 29th July at Zion Methodist Church in Lees, then 2.30pm at Oldham Crematorium, then at Springhead Liberal Club. Mike was well-known to many of our club members, who I know want to pay their respects. [David Emanuel]
25th JULY 2016
A FINAL REMINDER that it's RRR parkrun day this coming Saturday 30th July. Please come along to Oldham parkrun in Alexandra Park, whether to take part in the usual free weekly timed 5K run, volunteer or get your 1st chance to admire the shiny new RRR gazebo. This year our chosen date coincides with the 50th anniversary of England winning the World Cup in 1966 & we're marking the occasion by asking people to run in their favourite football shirt. We'll also be holding a 'guess the number of chocolate footballs in the jar' competition & there will be a penalty shoot-out after parkrun, all in aid of our charity of the year, Dr Kershaw's Hospice (£1 to enter each competition, so please bring along a little loose change). We'll also have the pacing team out in force, aiming to help people to new parkrun PBs. If you haven't run parkrun before it's all completely free & run by volunteers, you just need to register beforehand. It'll be great to get a big RRR turnout - we're really hoping to beat the Oldham attendance record, which currently stands at 215. See you on Saturday! [David Emanuel]
22nd JULY 2016
THANKS TO THOSE who expressed an interest in a coach trip to the Riverside 10-miler at Lancaster on 7th August! As a result, arrangements are being made for a coach which will leave Royton at 8.30am for an 11am race start, returning from Lancaster at 5pm. Cost expected to be around £10 per head. Please let me know that you definitely want a seat, or confirm to Bernie Goodwin.  [David Emanuel]

20th JULY 2016

IF YOU'RE NOT planning to run the Rochdale Half Marathon on 25th September, you may be interested in this offer from Cannonball Events. They are looking for a number of marshals for the race, ideally people who have some experience with regards to races or marshalling. In general the marshal points will range from 2-4 hours in duration, you will always be near other people & you will report to your own team leader. For your services you will be offered a free 10K/Half Marathon place to give to any person of your choice - with you out on the course to cheer them on! The alternative is a £20 voucher. They will also be having a prize draw for all the marshals, with £100 to be given to the winner at the race presentation & drawn by one of the race winners. If this appeals to you, please contact John Lloyd at Cannonball Events & he'll explain what would be involved.  [David Emanuel]
19th JULY 2016
OOPS! HAVING EXCITEDLY ANNOUNCED on Facebook that we're holding our latest RRR parkrun day on Saturday 30th July, I've just realised that I completely forgot to put it on the website. So with apologies to all the non-Facebookers...RRR parkrun day is when we team up with the organisers of Oldham parkrun in Alexandra Park, with the aim of getting a few more RRRs to try parkrun whilst giving us a bit of publicity amongst the other runners. This year our chosen date happens to coincide with the 50th anniversary of England winning the World Cup. Since that level of success seems unlikely to be repeated any time soon, we want people to mark the occasion by running in their favourite football shirt. We'll also be holding a 'guess the number of chocolate footballs in the jar' competition & there will be a penalty shoot-out after parkrun, all in aid of our charity of the year, Dr Kershaw's Hospice. Plus we'll have the pacing team out in force, aiming to help people to new parkrun PBs. If you haven't run parkrun before it's all completely free & run by volunteers, you just need to register beforehand. Hope to see you there on 30th July - we're looking to beat the current Oldham attendance record, which currently stands at 215! [David Emanuel]
15th JULY 2016
IMPORTANT DATE FOR your diary - this year's RRR Presentation Night will take place on Saturday 17th December at Royton Band Club. For those wondering why we no longer hold this event at the cricket club...essentially we've outgrown it! The maximum number allowed for events is no longer sufficient to accommodate all the RRRs (plus partners) who want to attend our annual shindig. Please make a note of the date, there will be more announcements closer to the time when tickets go on sale.  [David Emanuel]

2nd JULY 2016
A FEW CLUB MEMBERS have inquired about the possibility of organising a coach for the trip to the Riverside 10-miler at Lancaster on 7th August. To enable us to establish whether there is sufficient interest, please could you let me know if you would travel by coach if we book one & I'll pass details on to Bernie Goodwin!  [David Emanuel]

MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO Simon Bruce Lake & Angela Rogowskyj, both recognised at the 2016 Oldham Sports Awards. Well deserved!  [David Emanuel]

27th JUNE 2016
THE ORGANISERS OF Sunday's Southport Half Marathon have put out a last-minute plea for pacers for the race. They're seeking people to pace at 1:30, 2:30 & each of the 15 minute intervals in-between. You'll need to provide evidence of a recent run (around the last 6 weeks) that's 5-10% quicker than your chosen pace time & you'll need to use your own watch; in return you'll get a refund of your entry fee if you've already entered (free entry if you haven't), a pacer's technical T-shirt & access to staff car parking. Please e-mail Vital Events if you're interested.  [David Emanuel]

18th JUNE 2016
MANCHESTER UP & RUNNING will play host to Brooks on Wednesday 20th July (9.30am-6pm) for an introduction to their Run Signature equipment, providing "a radical new approach to gait analysis". Spaces are limited, so please phone 0161-8328338 or e-mail the store to book an appointment.  [David Emanuel]

JUST HAPPENED TO have a look at the London Marathon website & discovered that the closing date for 'Good For Age' applications is 5pm on Monday 20th June. That's just 2 days time! Seems a lot earlier than usual. Please click here to check whether you have a qualifying time - if so, follow the link to submit your application straight away!  [David Emanuel]

14th JUNE 2016
THOSE RRRs INTERESTED in watching as much of England as possible at Euro 2016, before they get knocked out on penalties in the Quarter Finals, will have noticed that the final & potentially crucial Group B match against Slovakia kicks off at 8pm on Monday 20th June. There was some discussion about arranging for training to start earlier, but the consensus is that all groups should set off at 7pm as usual. For those who want to watch the game it will be showing in the cricket club - some may just want to watch the 1st half there, before dashing home to watch Jamie Vardy come off the bench to score a late winner...  [David Emanuel]

5th JUNE 2016
JENNY O'CALLAGHAN has kindly pointed out on our Facebook page that Sandy Lane (the road from Middleton Road towards the Hope & Anchor pub) is closed from Monday 6th June for 7 weeks. Please allow extra time to get to the club on training nights!  [David Emanuel]

27th MAY 2016
SPECIAL OFFER AT Up & Running Manchester - join Club 4 & get 20% off for the Bank Holiday weekend. Worth a look!  [Bryan Lawton]

23rd MAY 2016
E-MAILS WERE SENT last week to those RRRs who have not (yet) renewed their membership for 2016-17. If you haven't paid & do wish to continue your membership then it's really straightforward - all the details & options for payment can be found on this website here. If you have decided not to renew your membership then we're really sorry to lose you - please let me know so that I don't keep pestering you! Please note that, unless you join another affiliated club, your England Athletics membership will lapse.  [David Emanuel]

21st MAY 2015

I KNOW THAT a few RRRs have already volunteered to marshal or generally help out at our club race The Royton Trail on Wednesday 13th July, but can I ask that if you have already told me you also let Mary Freer know. Mary has kindly offered to act as the volunteer coordinator for the event, for which I am very grateful. If you are thinking of helping out & haven't yet put your name forward, please let Mary know. Although don't forget that we also need a big entry from RRRs actually running, so please don't all volunteer!  [Bryan Lawton]
18th MAY 2016
WITH AN UNDER-15 cricket match scheduled for Royton Cricket Club on Monday 23rd May, it's going to be very busy in the car park & changing rooms. It has therefore been decided that an 'emergency away night' would be a good idea. Preferred venue appears to be Hollingworth Lake, so head for the Visitor Centre car park (OL15 0AQ - off Rakewood Road, just past the Wine Press pub). Please aim to be there at 6.45pm to set off at 7pm. Not sure who will be leading the pack runs at this stage, but I believe some will be looking for something fairly gentle ahead of the Dovestone Diamond race on Wednesday!  [David Emanuel]
9th MAY 2016
IF YOU'VE NOT already seen it, check out the June issue of Runner's World for a great piece about our very own Andy Hayhurst. An inspirational story & a great advert for the club!  [David Emanuel]
26th APRIL 2016
SOMETHING DIFFERENT at the club on Thursday 5th May! Karen Pheasant from a company called Arbonne will be available (in the car park) before & after training with samples of their phytosport products for you to try. Please say hello & see what they have to offer.  [David Emanuel]

WORD HAS REACHED us that someone has been collecting for charity in local pubs, presenting themselves as an RRR who has recently completed a marathon. Nothing wrong with this if it's genuine, of course - please let us know if you think this might have been you - but if it's not then we may have a scammer out there who could do some harm to the reputation of the club. Please keep your eyes/ears open & let me or any committee member know if you have any concerns.  [Bryan Lawton]

ANYONE INTERESTED in a bit of gait analysis with knobs on? If so you can book a slot at Manchester Up & Running on Deansgate between 3rd & 13th May. Stride Lab uses three cameras to assess form, motion & stride. Lots more information & sign-up here.  [Bryan Lawton]

22nd APRIL 2016
THERE'S BEEN a lot of chatter on Facebook & Twitter about the Manchester Marathons from 2013 through to 2015 now eing declared as short & no longer counting as a marathon, which is annoying but I can see the reason why UKA has come to this decision. With this in mind, what to do about the times achieved by people who ran from 2013 through to 2015 was discussed at last night's committee meeting. Our decision is to adjust (pro-rata) the times for these people to full marathon distance. I'll do this in the next couple of days. On this basis I can state, clearly & unequivocally that the RRR ladies marathon record holder is still Becki Robinson.  [Brian Moore]

JUNE ALLINGAN, Lady President of RRR, is taking part in this weekend's challenging Milltown Sprint Triathlon & is using this event to raise money for Mesothelioma UK. If you can contribute to this worthy cause, please visit June's fundraising page here.  [David Emanuel]
14th APRIL 2016
THE 3 MILLTOWN TO MOORS running events (7K, 10K & half marathon) are all included in this year's RRR club championship...but if you fancy trying something a bit different, how about the Sprint Triathlon on 24th April? The event is made up of a 400m swim, 20K bike ride & 5K run which includes "Saddleworth's most challenging inclines" (although not for the swimming leg, I believe). You can enter as a relay team if you want to share the fun. Full details on the Milltown to Moors website here.  [David Emanuel]

8th APRIL 2016
IF YOU'RE NOT planning to run the Mossley 10K (a club championship race!) then maybe this charity event on the same weekend might appeal instead. The Whittington Charity Challenge Marathon Day takes place in rural Staffordshire on Saturday 16th July & offers the option of a 4-lap full marathon, a 2-lap half marathon or a relay marathon with 4 runners completing a lap each. Sounds like fun!  [David Emanuel]

2nd APRIL 2016
INTRODUCING A NEW website feature to assist RRR members with their always- excellent fundraising efforts! If you're raising money for a charity via any race in the 2016 marathon/ultra listings, just send me a link to your fundraising page & I'll add the name of the charity & the link alongside your name. If your planned marathon/ultra isn't yet on the list then send me both race details & the fundraising link. It's just one more way of getting the message out (to club members & other visitors alike) & might just add a few extra pounds to the amount you raise.  [David Emanuel]

27th MARCH 2016
IF YOU'RE PLANNING to run Andy O'Sullivan's race at Cowm Reservoir this coming Wednesday (30th March), please be warned that Andy is expecting a big turnout for this one! Andy has asked that runners car share if at all possible & arrive in good time with entry forms already completed. Hopefully see you there!  [David Emanuel]

17th MARCH 2016
NOT THAT WE WOULD try to influence your vote at all...but just wanted to let you know that proud sponsors of The Royton Trail Up & Running has been shortlisted for the 'Best Customer Service', 'Best Online Retailer' & 'Best National Retailer' categories in the 2016 Running Awards. I know many of you will agree that the service in the Manchester store is exceptional & a certain RRR chairman will I suspect be inconsolable if they don't win. Voting in many categories closes in just a few days, so please follow this link to register & submit your votes. It only takes a couple of minutes!  [David Emanuel]

15th MARCH 2016
WHILST WRITING TO thank us for our contribution to this year's Dentdale Run ("I couldn't believe how many runners from Royton there were! You just seemed to keep coming. We are very appreciative of your continued support."), race director Scott Thornley has asked me to seek your opinion on some ideas for future events. "Now that we have chip timing in place (albeit with a few things that need ironing out), we might consider running a 7 mile (approx) race alongside the main race. Also under consideration would be a 2.5 mile fun run for families. What would your club mates think about this? Any opinions would be appreciated." If anyone has any views, please drop me a line & I'll pass all feedback on to Scott.  [David Emanuel]

14th MARCH 2016

GIVEN THAT WE'RE all very serious athletes I don't expect anyone will be interested in this idea from Lisa Howarth, but I pass it on anyway: "The Unofficial Saddleworth Beerwalk takes place on Saturday 21st May 2016, starting at 1pm from The Wellington Inn in Greenfield. It's an 11 mile walk with 11 pub stops, followed by a party at Uppermill Cricket Club in the evening. I was thinking we could get some charity collection boxes for Dr Kershaw's Hospice & raise some funds along the way. It's tradition to do this in fancy dress - I thought it might be very apt to do this in 118 outfits? There are no club championship races that weekend & it looks generally pretty clear. Fingers crossed we can get a few attending & it will make for a good day out. Last year the weather stayed on our side all day, so let's hope for some more sunshine!" If you might be interested in taking part, or have any other fancy dress ideas, please let Lisa know!  [David Emanuel]
10th MARCH 2016
IF YOU ARE BOOKED on the RRR Fun Bus to Dent on Saturday, here's all the information you need: said vehicle will be leaving the car park on Radcliffe Street by Mazzo Italian restaurant (OL2 6QL) at 9am prompt. The race starts at 1pm. Afterwards there may be a little post-race refuelling before we depart at 6pm, arriving back in Royton around 8-8.30pm. Then I believe everyone usually heads home for a mug of cocoa & an early night...  [David Emanuel]

9th MARCH 2016
ANDY O'SULLIVAN'S spring races get underway on Wednesday 30th March with the Brenda & Colin Robinson 5K Cowm Race at Whitworth. Andy will be using the race to raise funds for the local branch of Cancer Research UK, a cause particularly close to his heart, so he's hoping for a good turnout. As big supporters of Andy's races over the years, it would be great to have a strong RRR presence at this one!  [David Emanuel]

DR KERSHAW'S HOSPICE is arranging a bucket collection at Boundary Park on Easter Monday 28th March, ahead of Oldham's game against Chesterfield, & a few additional volunteers are needed. The plan is to meet outside the ground between 1-1.30pm & collect up to kick-off at 3pm (so could be ideal if you're going to the game anyway!). If any RRRs are available to help out, please contact Arron Cheshire at Dr Kershaw's on 0161-6249984.  [David Emanuel]

6th MARCH 2016
WITH MORE & MORE of our members getting involved in running beyond marathon distance, this seems a good time to point you towards the Science of Ultra podcast. Available from iTunes, this is put together by Shawn Bearden, a Professor of Phisiology at Idaho State University, who really knows stuff. There are currently 22 episodes available, covering subjects such as nutrition, hydration, training & racing, as well as 'spotlights' on individual ultra athletes. There's even a whole episode on gastrointestinal distress. If you're interested, there's also a website which includes links to blogs & other bits & pieces. Worth checking out!  [David Emanuel]

WORD HAS REACHED RRR Towers that the coach for next Saturday's trip to Dent is now full. Great news that so many people are going - not so good if you've not got around to booking your place. If anyone has booked/paid for a seat on the coach & is now not intending to use it, please contact Bernie Goodwin (07716802393) as soon as possible, so that we can accommodate any late requests.  [David Emanuel]

3rd MARCH 2016
AS IF YOU NEEDED reminding...the RRR annual membership fee of £43 is due by the end of this month at the latest! Details of how to pay, where your money goes & some of the benefits of being a member of our club can be found on the Membership Renewal page of this website.  [David Emanuel]

29th FEBRUARY 2016
THIS YEAR'S DOVESTONE DIAMOND takes place on Wednesday 25th May & there aren't many places left! Although it isn't in the RRR club championship this year I know it is popular with many if you haven't already entered, do so now before it's too late!  [David Emanuel]

27th FEBRUARY 2016
IF YOU ARE a Brooks Ghost wearer, you might be interested to know that Up & Running (Deansgate) is selling the Ghost 7 at £54.99 for one pair, £99.98 for two pairs (£49.99 each) & £134.97 for three pairs (£44.99 each).  [Bryan Lawton]

25th FEBRUARY 2016
FOLLOWING THE ANNOUNCEMENT that the Northern Athletics Road Relays in April have been relocated from Stockport to the somewhat less convenient Sunderland, our team captains Kirsty White & Shane Reading have been looking for a more local alternative team race for us to enter. The event that has caught their eye is the Bradford Millennium Way Relay on Sunday 26th June. This is a hilly off-road race, made up of 5 legs of between 8 & 10.7 miles, run in pairs (i.e. 10 runners per team). The 1st question is whether there is enough interest to enable us to enter an RRR team (or several) - so if this looks like something you'd like to take part in, please let me know by e-mail or tell Kirsty/Shane. Please note that, as it is essential to know the route in advance, all team members would have to commit to completing at least one recce of their allocated leg beforehand - the plan would be to organise several trips to do pack runs on different parts of the route. Look forward to hearing from you!  [David Emanuel]

24th FEBRUARY 2016
CLUB RESULTS have been published by Brian Moore following the Mad Dog 10K & the sharp-eyed amongst you will have noticed that there are some extra pages - for 3 new age category competitions. Brian explained this on the RRR Facebook page, but for those who haven't seen it: "After looking at (over a number of years) who has won prizes versus our near 50:50 male to female membership it became clear we needed to do something. For this reason we have introduced 3 new lady vet categories, FV35, FV45 & FV55...and men of mature age will now compete in MV40, MV45, MV50 & MV60 age categories. Everyone still competes in an ability group (Premiership to Group 6). Hopefully you'll find this a positive step. Obviously I'm happy to answer any questions you might have...". [David Emanuel]

23rd FEBRUARY 2016
OULTON PARK HALF MARATHON warning! Thanks to Richard Fiddling for actually reading the Event Booklet on the race website & pointing out that photographic ID is required (e.g. driving licence, passport) in order to collect your race number. It therefore goes without saying that it wouldn't be worth turning up on the day & trying to run in someone else's number...  [David Emanuel]

16th FEBRUARY 2016

IT'S OFF TO Boggart Hole this Saturday for the final cross-country race of the winter - & it looks like we could be set for our best-ever set of results. Men's & ladies teams are both lying in 2nd place, with the MV40s & MV50s also challenging near the top. Shane Reading (V40), Jason Keast (V45) & Barry Greaves (V55) are all in with a shout of a podium finish in their respective age groups & Kirsty White still has a (slim) chance of winning the FV40s. Hope plenty of RRRs will be coming along, whether running or supporting!  [David Emanuel]
15th FEBRUARY 2016
FOLLOWING THE ANNOUNCEMENT at the AGM that Stuart Carroll has decided to step down from the RRR Committee, I'm pleased to announce that Chris Nicholson was nominated to fill the vacancy & has duly been appointed to join the committee. There'll be more news to follow in the near future about exactly what Chris's role & responsibilities will be - but in the meantime I've added a nice picture & his contact details to the Contacts/Officials page. Welcome aboard Chris!  [David Emanuel]

IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED in running the Wilmslow Half Marathon this year, please note that the race is already 85% full, so you'll need to get your entry in pretty quickly. This year's race takes place on Sunday 3rd April - just before the 1st of the Littleborough 5Ks & the Greater Manchester Marathon, which is why it didn't make the cut for the club championship - but I'm sure there'll be some RRRs keen to give it a go!  [David Emanuel]

14th FEBRUARY 2016
BY POPULAR DEMAND, we will as usual be taking a coach to Dent for the Dentdale Run on Saturday 12th March. It's a challenging but rewarding race & the village pubs are always very welcoming afterwards! The fun bus will leave Royton at 9am, returning from Dent at 6pm to be back for around 8pm. To book your place, please transfer £13 per seat to the usual account (Sort Code 01-06-08, Account Number 43550592). Please include your name as the reference.  [David Emanuel]

A MEETING HAS been booked for 8.30pm on Monday 22nd February at the Cricket Club for a discussion of all aspects of club training. The Group Leaders for Monday/Thursday training nights have all been invited, but all members are welcome to attend. If you have any thoughts on how we train, how we communicate information about training sessions, what we could do differently or (if you're not a regular attendee) what would make you come along more frequently, we'd love to see you there!  [David Emanuel]

13th FEBRUARY 2016

THANKS TO EVERYONE who came along & took part in the RRR Quiz Night on Friday night at Royton Cricket Club. Some impressive scores all round, with Ken Dodd's Dad's Dog's Dead just pipping Jason's Argonauts to the top prize. Thanks also to June Allingan & her glamorous assistants for organising the 'stand up bingo' & raffle. A good night & just shy of £250 raised for our Charity of the Year, Dr Kershaw's Hospice. Well done all!  [David Emanuel]
11th FEBRUARY 2016
AS IF YOU NEED reminding...the annual RRR Quiz Night takes place tomorrow night (Friday 12th February) at Royton Cricket Club, our 1st fundraiser of the year for Dr Kershaw's Hospice. Teams of a maximum 6 permitted, cost is £6 per head to include the quiz, stand-up bingo & supper. All the fun starts at 7.30pm. We'd be grateful for a few donations of bottles - ideally full, preferably alcoholic - for raffle prizes (apologies for the short notice - June asked me to put this out ages ago & I completely forgot).  [David Emanuel]

2nd FEBRUARY 2016
HERE WE GO AGAIN! The 2016 Club Championship gets underway on Sunday in Southport & arrangements for the coach to the Mad Dog 10K have now been confirmed. The coach will set off from the car park by Mazzo Italian restaurant (OL2 6QL) & the Chinese at 7.45am prompt. After the race we will leave Southport at 5.30pm to be back in Royton for 7pm.  [David Emanuel]

25th JANUARY 2016
RIGHT, IT'S TIME to get yourself signed-up for one of the highlights of the year, the RRR Quiz Night! This year's quiz, which will be raising money for our Charity of the Year Dr Kershaw's Hospice, takes place on Friday 12th February at Royton Cricket Club (7.30pm kick-off). Teams up to a maximum of 6 allowed (non-RRRs very welcome), but please come along even if you haven't got a team & someone will take you in. Cost is £6 per head to include all the usual favourites - several rounds of quiz questions, stand-up bingo & supper. Please send an e-mail to confirm your interest, with approximate numbers in your team, to help with the catering.  [David Emanuel]

HAVING BEEN POSTPONED over Christmas because of the floods, the new Red Hot Toddy 10K has been rearranged for February...but unfortunately on Sunday 7th, the same day as the Mad Dog 10K. However, if you're not travelling to Southport, this looks like a decent alternative way to spend your Sunday morning. It's just £5 to enter & all race proceeds will go to the Calderdale Flood Relief Appeal. Full details on the Todmorden Harriers website.  [David Emanuel]

19th JANUARY 2016
INSPIRED BY SOME very fetching pictures posted on Facebook, together with a challenge that has started within June Allingan's running group, I've started a new gallery of photos of club members in RRR bobble hats. We're looking for as many pictures as possible, but especially those taken in 'extreme' places - on top of mountains, on tropical beaches, the choice is yours! There might even be a prize for the most spectacular photo posted this year. You can add pictures to the gallery yourself (you need to sign in first, but the instructions should be pretty clear) or, if you prefer, send them to me by e-mail. Oh & don't forget we're also still collecting pictures of RRRs at different parkruns around the country/world - we seem to have stalled at 14, but I know some of you have been visiting other events. Time to start taking your phone/camera with you!  [David Emanuel]

17th JANUARY 2016
WE NEED A VOLUNTEER to run the Base Group rota, as I am stepping down due to being much busier work-wise. There is already an e-mail group in place. It needs someone to send regular e-mails to that group, asking for any dates that people aren't available, then compile a rota based on that information for the following 2 months. Please contact me if you can help, or if you have any questions.  [Mary Freer]

16th JANUARY 2016
THANKS TO ALL RRRS who attended the AGM at the cricket club on Friday 15th January - just a couple of important announcements to make. First, with England Athletics increasing the individual registration fee to £13, it was agreed that the annual RRR membership fee would also increase by £1 to £43 (£30 for 2nd claim members). Fees are due to be paid by 31st March - further details & instructions for payment can be found on the Membership Renewal page. Secondly, Stuart Carroll has announced that he is stepping down from the role of Vice Chairman - on behalf of all members I would like to thank Stuart for all his efforts on behalf of the club whilst he has served on the committee. David Emanuel has agreed to step into the role of Vice Chairman, but this creates a vacancy on the committee. If you wish to nominate a fellow member for this role, please send us an e-mail by the end of January (but please check with that person first that they are happy to be nominated!). If more than one name is put forward, we will hold an online vote of all members in February.  [Bryan Lawton]

FINAL CALL FOR TICKETS for the Milltown to Moors Presentation Night! This event at St Anne's Rugby Club on Saturday 23rd January is being held for a very worthy cause, with all proceeds going to Children With Cancer UK. Tickets are £10 per head & can be obtained at training nights from James Wright or Garry Bower - or alternatively contact James on 07795673980.  [David Emanuel]

WE ARE ONCE AGAIN taking a coach to the first club championship race of the season, the Mad Dog 10K in Southport on Sunday 7th February. To book your seat you'll need to pay a deposit of £10 to the same account we used for Presentation Night tickets (Sort Code 01-06-08, Account Number 43550592) by Wednesday 3rd February at the latest. Please include your name as the reference!  [Bernie Goodwin]

14th JANUARY 2016
LOOKS LIKE THE WEATHER is trying to mess up our plans for RRR parkrun day/Mad Hatter's Tea Party on Saturday! If Oldham parkrun is cancelled, the plan is still for the RRR Cup draw to take place in the Boathouse Cafe once it opens at 10am. Before this, some of us will be at the Lion's Den at 9am as usual, for a cautious pack run around the park (avoiding the icy bits) - wearing our hats, of course.  [David Emanuel]

11th JANUARY 2016
FOLLOWING RECENT QUESTIONS to members of the RRR Committee, I've been asked to clarify the 'rules' regarding the annual allocation of club places for the London Marathon. In order to be entitled to enter the club ballot you must have been a 'first claim' RRR when you applied for a London place; you must provide your rejection letter/e-mail as proof; you should not have an existing 'good for age' access route; if you win a place one year, you can't enter the draw again the following year. There is no mandatory requirement to attend Presentation Night in person when the draw is made. People are unable to attend the event for many & varied reasons, including work & family commitments, and it is felt that it would be unfair to disqualify them from the ballot on this basis.  [David Emanuel]

10th JANUARY 2016
KICK-OFF NEXT WEEKEND in good company by popping along to the RRR Annual General Meeting on Friday 15th January. The AGM is held at Royton Cricket Club, starting at 7.30pm, & is a chance to have your say about any aspect of the club. If you have any items you would like added to the agenda, please send details to Club Secretary Brian Moore by Thursday 14th January at the latest. Friday will also be the last chance to enter this year's RRR Cup, if you haven't already done so, before we make the draw for the First Round at Alexandra Park on Saturday 16th. Hope to see plenty of you there!  [David Emanuel]

8th JANUARY 2016

YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE SEEN the exciting news that funding has been obtained to set up a junior parkrun in Oldham! The plan is for the event, for children aged 4-14, to take place in Alexandra Park on Sunday mornings. There's a meeting at 7pm on Tuesday 19th January at the Up Steps Inn (Weatherspoons in Oldham High Street) to share the latest information, answer any questions & recruit for the event team. If you'd like to be involved please go along or, if you can't make the meeting, send an e-mail to Maria Rushton ( & she will keep you updated on developments.  [David Emanuel]

7th JANUARY 2016

IN CASE YOU haven't seen Mary Freer's message on the RRR Facebook page this week...we're currently quite low on volunteers for the RRR drinks station at the Greater Manchester Marathon on 10th April, possibly because so many of us have entered the race this year. Anyone who has been involved in the past will tell you that it's a great way to be part of the event, almost as good as running it. If you can help out please send Mary an e-mail. It's not restricted to club members, so please feel free to invite your family & friends. We'll even take pets, if they can be trained by early April to pick up discarded water bottles...  [David Emanuel]

3rd JANUARY 2016

FOLLOWING THE ANNOUNCEMENT of a special RRR discount for Huddersfield Half Marathon entry, Wane Law has been in touch to offer further discounts on a number of other Team OA events - including the Pieathlon, Wineathlon & White Rose Ultras. You can access full details on the OA website here - please note that the discount code is different to that for the Huddersfield race. Wane advises checking this page from time to time, as more races may be added.  [David Emanuel]

1st JANUARY 2016

Happy New Year to all RRRs! Here's wishing every club member a massively successful 2016 - may all your running targets be achieved & all your race times be PBs.

We enter the new year in a very healthy position, with more than 200 members & many who joined last year already making a great contribution to the club. Training nights continue to thrive, thanks to the great efforts of the Group Leaders & others who help out (including those on the rota to lead the base group), while there has been a fresh influx of RRR participants at Brian Moore's track sessions. The RunEngland beginners group also continues to be a great success, with a good number progressing to club membership.

2015 was yet another record-breaking year for Club Championship participation - 1,176 races completed in total (over 1,000 for the 1st time), an average of 69.2 RRRs per race. 173 members completed at least one club race, with 67 running 9 or more. We introduced the 'thresholds' too, which seems to have helped get even more people out racing & driven many to new personal best times. For the 2nd year running 4 RRRs (Shane Reading, Rochelle Evans, Mike Doolan & Eloise Bartlett) completed all 17 club races; Shane & Eloise even ran all 3 of the Littleborough 5K series (which only counts once)! Shane's unbroken sequence is now an incredible 48 races, stretching back to 2013. We also now have the 1st members of the '150 Club' (Bernie Goodwin & Debbie Shaw) along with many other new additions to the Roll of Honour.

There were marathon records aplenty too - 71 RRRs completed 107 races between them, including a fantastic new female record (3:14:26) by Becki Robinson, with Jen Bloor (3:28:44) also beating the previous best which had stood since 2004.

The record for most RRRs in a race was also broken & is now 103, set at The Royton Trail. The overall total of 292 finishers was also a record for our race, as we successfully introduced online entry for the 1st time. Thanks to everyone who helped make the race a great success, including all the marshals & other officials.

2015 was another excellent year for cross-country, with more RRRs taking part than ever before. Results are getting better too, culminating in a magnificent joint 1st place in the 2014/15 South East Lancs League for the ladies team (mainly Kirsty White, Jen Bloor & Becki Robinson, but Jane Augsburger & Clare Darraugh also contributed vital points). In the Fell Race Grand Prix a great performance by Danny McManus saw him finish 2nd Senior Male (4th overall), while Neil Brock, Jason Keast & Barry Greaves were also rewarded for completing 5 or more races. Jason ran 9 times, amongst the highest in the whole competition, a great effort when he also ran 14 club championship races & competed in most of the cross-country events last year, making him a deserved winner of the 'Off-Road Runner of the Year' award alongside Nefa Nessa. It would be good to see some female RRRs sampling the fells this year! There has also been increasing RRR involvement in ultras & off-road marathons, including Paul Craddock (various!), Mark Taylor (Lakeland 100), Julie Greenwood & Eileen Ingham (Cotswold Way), Simon Howard, Mike Bundy & Martin Wildman. Colin Green & I even won the pairs title in the Cotswold 24 Hour Race!

Our Manchester Marathon Drinks Station once again received great feedback, led superbly by Mary Freer for the first time. It also earned the club a £600 donation from Xtra Mile Events; we'll be back in April with Mary in charge again! We also had a prime spot by the finish line in Club Corner at the Chester Marathon/Metric Marathon because of the number of entrants we had for these two races.

We maintained our strong links with Oldham parkrun - there's the RRR Cup of course (a record 67 entered last year) & we had 2 successful 'parkrun days' in January & June, while the RRR pacing team led by Dan Yarwood has again made a great contribution, helping many people to PBs throughout the year.

Our Team Captains Shane Reading & Kirsty White did a wonderful job, not least in leading us into 3 successful club relay competitions. This started with an amazing 48 RRRs at the Northern Athletics race at Liverpool in March, followed by 34 in the North West Counties at Ormskirk in September (more than any other club & including 3rd place in Greater Manchester for the ladies 'A' team), then an 'elite' men's team in the Northern Athletics event in Blackpool a week later.

And finally...we have extended our range of club kit to include RRR buffs (all sold!) & new bobble hats, while there have been typically generous group & individual efforts in fundraising for Oldham Mountain Rescue & many other charities (including Quiz Night, raffles & a cake sale at Parkrun Day in June, plus Fay Royle & June running for OMRT). Quite a year - here's hoping for even better in 2016!  [David Emanuel]
