NEWS ARCHIVE - 2015

26th DECEMBER 2015
WORD REACHES RRR TOWERS that the Great Warford 10 mile race will not take place in 2016 & is unlikely to return. The former race director advises us that "I have decided after many years not to organise any more races & I don't think anyone else will take it on". This leaves us still short of a 10 mile race for the RRR Club Championship - those that have previously been suggested (Rhyl, Terry Nortley, Bluebell Trail) either clash with other club races or are too close to major marathons, while the Stockport 10 is too late in the year for trophy engraving, etc. If anyone has an alternative favourite 10-miler you'd like to propose, please let me know!  [David Emanuel]

IF YOU WERE PLANNING to take in a race over the holiday, please note that the Red Hot Toddy 10K & Ribble Valley 10K, both due to take place on Sunday 27th December, have been cancelled due to flooding. However Andy O'Sulivan advises that his traditional New Years Day Awakener at Whitworth is "going ahead whatever"! He's even offered to go up & dredge the reservoir if necessary...  [David Emanuel]

21st DECEMBER 2015
WITH THE 2015 RRR CUP presented to Bryan Lawton on Saturday, thoughts inevitably turn to the 2016 competition. The format seems to have worked OK so far, so we won't be changing anything - it's still free to enter & entrants will still race 'head-to-head' at Oldham parkrun according to a random draw, on a mutually agreed date, with winners decided by a handicap system based on your best (recent) 5K times. You can register for the 2016 RRR Cup NOW simply by sending an e-mail. The competition will be launched in spectacular style at the next RRR parkrun day on Saturday 16th January 2016. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland 1st appearing in print, we'll be holding a 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' at Oldham parkrun. All runners will be encouraged to turn up in interesting headwear - this could be the perfect opportunity for a 1st outing for your new RRR bobble hat! There may even be a prize for the most spectacular bonnet. Where does the 'tea party' fit in? Well after the run we'll invite all RRRs along to the Boathouse Cafe for tea & cake, whilst watching the thrilling draw for the First Round of the RRR Cup. If we get as many entrants as this year then Brian Moore's bingo machine is going to be very busy...  [David Emanuel]

20th DECEMBER 2015
ANOTHER VERY SUCCESSFUL Presentation Night on Saturday, thanks to everyone who attended. You can see a full list of all the award winners here. Many congratulations to everyone who picked up a prize, including our new Club Champions Phil Marsden & Jen Bloor as well as the runaway winner of the Rod Bowers Trophy for Club Runner of the Year - the only award voted for by the members - Ronnie Quinn. Other news from the night - the names drawn to take the 3 club places at next year's London Marathon were Vikki Smith, James Wright & Jimmy Beadman, who I'm sure will all love the VLM experience; Dr Kershaw's Hospice won the vote to be the club's Charity of the Year for 2016; Jen Bloor won a place in the 2016 Greater Manchester Marathon, donated to us by our friends at Cannonball Events; & Emma Bower won a year's free RRR membership via the Presentation Night quiz. Many thanks to everyone involved in organising this year's event!  [David Emanuel]

DID YOU KNOW
that New Year's Day is the only occasion when you are allowed to register two parkruns on the same day? This means you can kickstart your 2016 with a 9am run at South Manchester, then dash back to Oldham parkrun for the 10.30am start (Oldham is also holding a Christmas Day run, in case you hadn't heard!). All weather-permitting, of course. In addition, if you fancy a nice friendly pack run to finish 2015 in style, Middleton Harriers are inviting runners to join them for a New Year's Eve pack run. Meeting at Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre at 10.15am for a 10.30 start, there are two options - a 6-mile run taking around 1hr 20mins on muddy tracks & trails (but not too hilly!) & a longer 11-mile route (about 2hrs 30) which is more hilly, heading south along the Pennine Way. These are pack runs, so runners will re-group regularly. The routes are prone to bad weather, so please make sure you have the right protective clothing with you, maybe a drink & a snack too. Tea & cakes in the Visitor Centre cafe afterwards!  [David Emanuel]

13th DECEMBER 2015
WITH THE FESTIVE SEASON fast approaching, please note that the last 'official' club training night of the year - both track session & run from the cricket club - will be on Monday 21st December. Both will resume on Monday 4th January 2016. I'm sure that RRR members will be teaming up to arrange all sorts of running over the holiday period, but neither of our usual venues will be open.  [David Emanuel]

IT'S THAT TIME again! If you wish to volunteer to help out on the RRR water station at the 2016 Greater Manchester Marathon - the best water station on the course - please send me an e-mail. The race takes place on Sunday 10th April 2016 & you'll be needed from early morning until late afternoon. It's a fun day! We have a great spot a couple of miles from the finish, complete with pub & mini market. Hope you can help.  [Mary Freer]

A MESSAGE REACHES RRR HQ from Sam Blacow: "I am one of the North West parkrun UK Ambassadors & will be activating a new parkrun in Rochdale, although there isn't yet a volunteer team - so that is my current task. I'll be arranging a meeting in the new year to meet with people that might be interested in getting involved as part of the core team. Do you have anyone in your club that might be interested?" If this sounds like something you'd like to hear more about, please contact Sam direct via sam.blacow@parkrun.com  [David Emanuel]

6th DECEMBER 2015
TWO DATES to put in your 2016 diary (does anybody still use diaries? if not, what do business people give out at Christmas to their favourite clients?): the RRR AGM will take place on Friday 15th January, will nest year's Charity Quiz Night will be on Friday 12th February. Both events will be held at Royton Cricket Club. More details to follow in due course!  [David Emanuel]

4th DECEMBER 2015
WITH THE RRR Presentation Night fast approaching (see the Home Page for details), we'd really like your help in providing prizes for the charity raffle. Please bring your donations along to the club on any training night & give them to June Allingan, Mary Freer or any other member of the RRR Committee. June has a cunning plan to ensure that the raffle takes a little less time this year & getting hold of the prizes in advance will be a great help!  [David Emanuel]

1st DECEMBER 2015

EVERY YEAR I organise a couple of Christmas runs from the cricket club dressed up as Santa, or in a festive fashion. These runs are open to runners of all abilities. We run to the Halfway House on Rochdale Road & have a swift drink, then over to Broad Lane to another pub (that I cannot remember the name of). Dates this year are Monday 14th & Thursday 17th December. All welcome, but you MUST get dressed up & bring a couple of quid for a drink.  [Ronnie Quinn]
29th NOVEMBER 2015
THE THIRD RACE in this winter's South East Lancs cross-country series takes place at Tandle Hills on Saturday 23rd January 2016. The race is hosted by Oldham & Royton Harriers, but last year a number of RRRs volunteered as marshals. According to O&R's Brian Schofield, "without their help the event could not have been staged". If anyone is available to help out next January, please contact Brian direct on 0161-6209556.  [Bryan Lawton]

26th NOVEMBER 2015
MORE LIKE Black Weekend than Black Friday...Up & Running Manchester, sponsor of The Royton Trail, is offering 20% off footwear & clothing, online & in store, from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th November. Don't miss out!  [Bryan Lawton]

21st NOVEMBER 2015

IN CASE YOU'RE not aware, the Royton Cricket Club Committee has installed a new electronic till at the Club, which has many additional features. One of these is a Loyalty Card for members (including RRR) which gives you a price reduction on drinks. If you do not (yet) have a Loyalty Card, please call into the club with your membership book & the staff will issue you a card (please avoid days when there is a function taking place). Once issued, your Loyalty Card has to be swiped on the till to obtain a discount, so please remember to keep it with you. Another feature of the new till is that you can load funds onto your card, so you will have no need to bring cash with you. You can also request a receipt showing the current balance on the card. Finally, the club has purchased a 'Chip & PIN' device, so you can now pay for drinks or load your Loyalty Card by debit card. If you have any questions about any of this, please speak to a Cricket Club Committee Member or any of the bar staff.  [David Emanuel]
19th NOVEMBER 2015
WE'VE DONE IT! Despite a few recent resignations, a flurry of recent new members (taking advantage of the £25 membership deal) has today seen us reach the very special milestone of 200 1st claim members. This is particularly significant as it should, once they are all registered with England Athletics, allow us to claim an extra club place for next year's London Marathon. All those rejected in the VLM ballot & anxiously waiting for the draw at Presentation Night will I'm sure be delighted to hear that there is now a 3rd place up for grabs. A warm welcome to all new members, with a special mention to No. 200 Sharon Dracup. Thanks too to all the RRRs who have encouraged people to join the club in recent weeks, not least Sharon's son Howard!  [David Emanuel]

A MESSAGE
from Up & Running Manchester, sponsors of The Royton Trail: "With Christmas fast approaching, Up & Running is offering running club members a special 3for2 offer across all Sub4 clothing & accessories. From the Sub4 Storm jacket (rrp £140) to a Sub4 bottle - everything from this brand is included. From now until Christmas Eve, this exclusive deal is open to all club runners as a thank you for your support throughout the year, so please remember your England Athletics membership card in order to take advantage of this exclusive offer! There are other deals in store, such as the Sub4 hat with green or yellow pompom & Flash gloves for £20, or a triple pack of Groundhog running socks for just £15. Please note that this is an exclusive offer which won't be advertised in store.  [Bryan Lawton]

16th NOVEMBER 2015

WE'LL BE HAVING a collection for Oldham Foodbank at the club again this year, on Monday 23rd & Thursday 26th November. Please bring anything you can from this list: tinned meat/fish, UHT milk, sugar (500g/1kg), UHT fruit juice (carton), tinned vegetables, soup, pasta sauces, sponge pudding (tinned), tomatoes (tinned), cereals, rice pudding (tinned), tea bags/instant coffee, instant mashed potato, rice/pasta, tinned fruit, biscuits/snack bars, chocolate treats. Also, chocolate advent calendars would be great for kids. Thanks in advance! For information on how the foodbank works, please click here. [Mary Freer]

SAVE THE DATE! On Saturday 23rd January 2016 James & Della Wright are holding a charity fundraiser for Children With Cancer UK. The event will include presentations to the winners of the 2015 Milltown to Moors events & recognition of those who took part in all three races. Full details, including ticket prices, will be released in the next two weeks.  [David Emanuel]

15th NOVEMBER 2015

I'VE JUST published the marathon tables, using the "Marathons in 2015" page and searching results of these marathons (for people who might have been missing from the marathon list). I think I've got everyone in the results. If I've missed you my apologies - please click here to let me know so I can amend them. [Brian Moore]

10th NOVEMBER 2015
THIS YEAR'S Run The Moors Fell Grand Prix Presentation Night takes place, as usual, at Bamford Bowling Club on Friday 4th December, starting at 7pm. Ticket price is unchanged at £7 per head, which includes dinner (pie & peas), a guest speaker & the dishing out of loads of prizes. I'm sure those who have been before will confirm that it's a good night out! We have one prize-winner this year, with Danny McManus a superb 2nd in the Senior Male competition (congratulations Danny!), although a few other RRRs will receive something for completing 5 or more races in the series. It would be great to have a good crowd of RRRs in the room to give Danny & the others a cheer when they collect their awards - so please send me an e-mail if you'd like a ticket (or two) & I'll put the order in.  [David Emanuel]

8th NOVEMBER 2015
WITH THE 2015 road race season now over, it's time to have your say on one of the most prestigious trophies to be presented at the RRR Presentation Night on 19th December. The Rod Bowers Trophy for RRR Club Runner of the Year is presented to the person that members believe has made the greatest contribution to the club in the last 12 months. That's not necessarily the best or the fastest runner, but the person you believe has made the best overall contribution to RRR. Given our growing membership, none of us know every club member - but this a personal vote, based on the people you know through training, races, parkrun, social events, Facebook, etc. Every vote is important, it's almost always close, so please have your say! Deadline for submitting your vote is Sunday 29th November. Please click here for the online voting form. On the same form you will be asked to select your preference for the club 'Charity of the Year' for 2016 - the charity to which donations will be made from any club fundraising activity throughout next year. Nominations from members this year are Dr Kershaw's Hospice, Oldham Citizens Advice Bureau, Springhill Hospice & PAPYRUS. Information about each charity (plus links to their websites) can be found alongside the voting form at the link above. All responses are completely confidential - no RRR member will know how you cast your vote.

But that's not all! We'd also like you to tell the RRR Committee how you rated this season's club races & which other event(s) you'd like to see included in the 2016 RRR Club Championship. Click here for a separate form which allows you to give a rating to each race. You don't need to score every race, but feel free to give a rating even if you didn't take part (you may have been a spectator or taken part in a previous year, for example). Then, if you wish, tell us of other favourite events that you'd like to be considered for next year's race list.

We look forward to hearing your views! If you have any questions or are having difficulty accessing or completing the forms, please let me know.  [David Emanuel]

MORE DETAILS REGARDING the Presentation Night on Saturday 19th December at Royton Band Club. Tickets are priced at £12.50 & I have set up a bank account for members to pay into (Sort Code 01-06-08, Account No 43550592), which should make it a lot easier for everyone. Please include your name as the reference. The cut-off date for payment is Sunday 13th December. Please make sure you meet this deadline, as it's important for catering numbers. You can contact me on Facebook or by e-mail. Look forward to seeing you there! [Bernie Goodwin]

WE'VE ALREADY ANNOUNCED that the Mad Dog 10K in Southport on 7th February will be the first race of the RRR 2016 club championship season. If you're intending to run but haven't yet entered, please don't leave it too long - the race is limited to 2,500 entries & the race website shows that there are currently less than 400 places left.  [David Emanuel]
4th NOVEMBER 2015
HERE'S ANOTHER OFFER from Up & Running Manchester

23rd OCTOBER 2015
JUST ONE RACE left to go in the 2015 RRR Club Championship & we head to Keswick next weekend with a number of prizes still up for grabs. The fact that Stephen Lee & Liz Phillips aren't able to run in the final race means that Group 2 & Group 6 will finish as they currently stand, but there will be plenty of excitement elsewhere! Group 1 remains the most open, as the top 3 of Richard Fiddling, Bryan Lawton & Dave Ellis can still finish in any order, while the V45s is a straight battle for 1st place between Dave Peart & Bernie Goodwin. Kirsty White & Jane Augsburger will be racing for 2nd place in the Ladies Championship behind Jen Bloor, as will Shane Reading & Rob Battye behind Phil Marsden in the V40s. 3rd place in the Championship is between Brad Howard & Dave Freer, while Damian Mercer, Val Kilburn & Ray Williams will battle for the same position in Group 3. Should be a great day out!  [David Emanuel]

19th OCTOBER 2015
IF YOU DIDN'T clear out your bank account taking advantage of the discount available at Up & Running Manchester over the weekend, here's another special offer which may be of interest! BAM, suppliers of bamboo clothing, are for a limited period offering RRR members 20% off any order made via their website. Just use the discount code 'Royton' during the checkout process. Never worn clothing made from bamboo? Neither had I until earlier this year, but I'm definitely a convert now. BAM claim a number of benefits for their fabric, including its moisture-wicking & antibacterial properties, as well as it being good for the environment. I've worn bamboo socks for all three marathons I've completed this year, as well as the Cotswold 24 Hour Race that Colin Green & I ran in the summer (when I covered more than 75 miles), without a single blister. The 20% discount is available for a trial period until the end of November & can be used for all purchases from their full product range, not just sportswear.  [David Emanuel]

15th OCTOBER 2015
WITH JUST TWO RACES TO GO, I thought I'd have a look at the Club Championship standings ahead of the Oldham Half Marathon to see what's still to be decided. If you're in the running for a prize I'm sure you're aware of the position in your own Group, but maybe not all the others!

A few things are already decided. Jen Bloor is the new Ladies Champion (for the first time!), Phil Marsden has secured the V40 title, Ronnie Quinn has retained his V60 prize with Chris Eavers guaranteed 2nd place & I've won the V50s again. Neil Brock, Jane Augsburger & Rebecca Mercer have won the Championship, Group 2 & Group 5 respectively. Everything in Group 4 is sorted - Martin Jones has finished top ahead of Paul Cooke & Selina McLean.

However that still leaves a lot to be resolved! It all depends on who runs in the last two races...but Danny McManus can still match Phil Marsden's points total in the Premiership & Rob Battye could overtake Shane Reading in 3rd place. Jane Augsburger & Kirsty White will finish 2nd & 3rd in the Ladies Championship, but the order is still to be decided. 2nd & 3rd in the Championship look to be between Jen Bloor, Brad Howard & Dave Freer, but Dave Hall can still get in on the act if he runs both remaining races. The Group 1 battle between Richard Fiddling, Bryan Lawton & Dave Ellis is bound to go down to the final race at Keswick, with Matt Kilburn & Jason Keast still in with a shout for 3rd place. 2nd & 3rd in Group 2 seem likely to go to either Lee Higginbottom, Garry Bower or Stephen Lee, but several others (Ronnie Quinn, Debbie Shaw, Rochelle Evans, Chris Eavers) could still - mathematically - claim 3rd place. Either Carl O'Callaghan or Dave Phillips will win Group 3, while Val Kilburn can still beat Damian Mercer for 3rd. Ray McBride could finish 2nd in Group 5 ahead of Mike Doolan, but if he doesn't complete a 9th race then Jillian Heywood will claim a medal. Group 6 is still wide open - Claire Timms is guaranteed 1st or 2nd, but she can still be beaten by Niparun Nessa, with Liz Phillips & Eloise Bartlett also in the running for prizes.

In the race for age category prizes, Shane Reading & Rob Battye look most likely to claim 2nd & 3rd in the V40s but Brad Howard, Kirsty White, Ronnie Garrod, Owen Flage & Dave McBride still have a chance. The V45s is a straight race between Bernie Goodwin & Dave Peart, with 4 runners (Dave Freer, Richard Fiddling, Bryan Lawton, Matt Kilburn) chasing 3rd place. Ian Dale & Neil Brock will finish 2nd & 3rd V50s, with Ian favourite for 2nd place at the moment. 3rd V60 will be claimed by either Dave Phillips or Mike Doolan.

Thanks to everyone who has competed in the Club Championship this year & helped bring us to this exciting conclusion. Sure we'll all be looking at the results on Sunday with added interest!  [David Emanuel]

13th OCTOBER 2015
IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR when we start the process of choosing the RRR Charity of the Year for 2016 - the organisation that we'll support via club events next year. Since we started doing this, several years ago, the club has donated more than £10,000 to Dr Kershaw's Hospice (between 2011-2014) through group & individual fundraising, as well as providing more practical help. This year we have raised money for Oldham Mountain Rescue at our annual Quiz Night & the cake sale at RRR Parkrun Day. Next month we'll be asking all members to select their preferred charity for 2016, alongside the vote for Club Runner of the Year. However the first step is to ask for suggestions for which charities should be on the voting list. Please send me an e-mail by the end of October if you wish to propose your favourite charity. Please give a brief explanation of why you think they deserve our support in 2016.  [David Emanuel]

QUITE A FEW RRRs
have taken part in the
Run The Moors Fell Race Grand Prix this year and, with one race to go, a few are still in with a (mathematical) chance of picking up a prize! If that includes you, please note that this year's presentation will take place at Bamford Bowling Club on Friday 4th December. I'll post another message when tickets go on sale.  [David Emanuel]

NOT THAT I REALLY WANT any of you to turn up & beat me (I'm reigning champion, don't you know!), but I suppose I have to mention that this year's Santa Dash or Dawdle, a circuit of Hollingworth Lake in a Santa suit organised by Springhill Hospice, takes place on Sunday 13th December. This year is the 10th anniversary & they're hoping to beat last year's record of 400 Santas. More details & registration here.  [David Emanuel]

THE CITY OF SALFORD WOMEN'S 5.25 MILE
RUN is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. To celebrate they are offering special anniversary medals & T-shirts to all finishers, as well as an extensive range of prizes for individuals & teams (4 to count). The race takes place on Sunday 29th November. If you would like to take part - only if you happen to be a woman, of course - you'll find full details here.  [David Emanuel]

11th OCTOBER 2015
A REMINDER TO MEMBERS that all of our Group Leaders are volunteers, often giving up their own training to help others - the club couldn't function without them. They are not there to be 'shot at' on training nights. If any member has an issue with a Group Leader or the way they lead a session then please take this up directly with myself or, in my absence, any other member of the committee.  [Bryan Lawton]

8th OCTOBER 2015
IN AN E-MAIL TO RRR MEMBERS earlier this week, I mentioned (in relation to club places for next year's London Marathon) that "we'll definitely get three...". Turns out that sentence should have contained neither the words 'definitely' or 'three', as the race organisers have reduced the club allocation. As it stands we will only get two guaranteed places, when it looks like we'll have a record number of RRRs rejected through the ballot & applying for them. Even more reason to tell your friends about the special offer for new members joining between now & the end of the year - if we can attract enough newbies between now & the beginning of December, we may still qualify for a third marathon place!  [David Emanuel]

7th OCTOBER 2015
AS I'M SURE YOU KNOW, the long RRR club championship season finishes in spectacular style with a trip to the Lake District for the Derwentwater 10 on Sunday 1st November, a race described (admittedly on its own website) as "the UK's most scenic 10 mile road race". That same website currently shows that less than 40 RRRs have entered to date, so there's lots of you yet to sign up & you really don't want to miss out on this one! Please note that online entries are limited to 430 & with Halifax Harriers also apparently using it as a club race they're already up to 227. Once you've entered the race, you can book a place on the RRR coach by simply sending me an e-mail. There are some changes to the course this year, which are described here (including a reference to us, which suggests that our reputation for consumption of ale spreads far & wide).  [David Emanuel]

5th OCTOBER 2015
AS YOU MAY HAVE SEEN on the RRR Facebook page, entries for the 2016 Southport Mad Dog 10K 2016 have opened & the race seems to be filling up faster than ever. As a result, the RRR Committee has recognised that members require an early decision & has agreed that this will once again be the 1st race in the 2016 Club Championship calendar. For the remaining races we will once again be canvassing the views of all members - once the current season has finished - with the aim of using your feedback to help with decision-making, before communicating the full race list by the end of the year. For now, you might want to head to the Mad Dog website before it's too late!  [David Emanuel]

2nd OCTOBER 2015

IT'S VERY SHORT NOTICE, but the Chester Marathon organisers advise that they are currently short of a few marshals at the 10-13 mile section of this Sunday's race. If you're available & would like to help out you will be rewarded a goody bag, T-shirt & refreshments as well as the 'pleasure' of seeing me & several other RRRs in action. Contact Elaine or Pauline at Active Leisure Events to volunteer!  [David Emanuel]
1st OCTOBER 2015
HERE'S AN OFFER worth taking up...as if Oldham Half Marathon weekend wasn't exciting enough already, you can also take advantage of a 25% exclusive discount for club members at Up & Running Manchester. The offer is available throughout the weekend 17th-18th October, but please remember to take your EA card with you!  [David Emanuel]

JUST A REMINDER that there's a meeting for all RRR Base Group members & leaders on Monday 5th October. The meeting is taking place at 8.30pm in the bar at Royton Cricket Club. Hope you can make it! [Mary Freer]
29th SEPTEMBER 2015
THOSE OF YOU RUNNING the Chester Marathon or Metric Marathon on Sunday should now have received your race number & programme. If so, you'll probably have seen that parking at the Racecourse closes at 8am & will cost £3 per car. I'll be there for that time with the RRR gazebo & banner - apparently we'll have a pitch marked with the club name, so please come & find us. There will be 20 clubs in Club Corner, with the biggest nearer the finishing line - I know there is at least one club with more than our 28 participants, but hopefully not many! I'm told that there will be a "race nutrition pack & crowd participation pack" for me to collect, which sound intriguing, but please feel free to bring along food & drink for any spectators & for after the race (I think I promised to make cake for Nefa again). Look forward to seeing you there!  [David Emanuel]

IT CLASHES WITH the first cross-country race of the season at Leigh, but if anyone is looking for a more local alternative you might want to consider the Race4Rugby 10K at Littleborough Rugby Club. Starting at 12 noon on Saturday 10th October, this is a challenging but enjoyable off-road course. I ran it last year & am disappointed to miss it this time, but cross-country has to come first!  [David Emanuel]

27th SEPTEMBER 2015
AS USUAL RRR will be taking a coach to the final road race of the season, the Derwentwater 10 on Sunday 1st November. The coach will leave Royton at 8.15am, returning for 8.30pm. Price to be confirmed. A list will go up at the cricket club, but if you prefer just send an e-mail to book your seat. All bookings must be made by 25th October.  [David Emanuel]

JUST A REMINDER that, as an affiliated club we abide by England Athletics rules. RRR members must run in a club vest when entered into a race as a Royton Road Runner (or in their 1st claim colours if not RRR).  [Bryan Lawton]

THE RRR COMMITTEE is looking into purchasing some new 'business cards'. The idea (suggested by Ronnie Quinn) is that these would be given to Group Leaders to hand out to any 'unattached' runners encountered whilst out on training nights. We want these to be eye-catching enough to encourage people to come along & give us a try - which is where you come in! If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for a card design, please send it through.  [Bryan Lawton]

TICKETS FOR THE RRR Presentation Night on Saturday 19th December at Royton Band Club will be priced at £12.50.  [Bryan Lawton]

22nd SEPTEMBER 2015
IT'S TOO LATE for this year, as the race is already full, but some of you (those that like a challenge) might fancy trying the Hell Of A Hill Marathon next year? It sounds like quite a course, over stone & muddy trail, with 6,000 feet elevation gain, passing over the summit of Rivington Pike 8 times...but the real challenge is to do it on five consecutive days! It's pretty exclusive as there are only 40 places available each year, but as the race website says, "You don't have to be a fast or elite athlete to enter, you do need the ability to get round the toughest marathon course within a 9 hour time limit...for the runners it is set to be 5 days of mental and physical hell but the rewards for finishing will last a lifetime!"  [David Emanuel]

19th SEPTEMBER 2015
THERE IS A MEETING at Royton Cricket Club on Wednesday 23rd September at 8pm to discuss new ideas for social events. Any members from the cricket, bowling, tennis & running clubs are invited to attend.  [David Emanuel]

15th SEPTEMBER 2015
AN INTERESTING OFFER from Cannonball Events for the Tandle Hill Trail Race on 25th October. John Lloyd is seeking some marshals for the race & is offering in exchange a free place in the race (for a friend/fellow RRR) PLUS a further free place at any other future Cannonball race (excluding ultras or half marathons). John reckons you'll be required for a maximum 1.5 hours & full instructions & directions will be given. If you wish to take advantage of this offer just send me an e-mail - please advise who you wish to give the free place to!  [David Emanuel]

IF YOU WERE AT the Brownhouse Reservoir race last Thursday, you probably heard that this year's Ron Hill 5K (celebrating the great man's 77th birthday) takes place on Saturday 26th September. Since this is the day before the Swinton 10, you might be giving it a miss this year...but Andy O'Sullivan has been in touch to say that RRR members can still purchase the traditional race mug if you wish to do so. Probably best to contact Andy direct if you wish to take advantage of this offer, which is available to our club only!  [David Emanuel]

8th SEPTEMBER 2015

MESSAGE FROM Steve Jones ahead of the Brownhouse Reservoir Race on Thursday: "I was travelling towards Rochdale via A58 (Manchester Rd) on Sunday & noted the A671 (Whitworth Rd/Burnley Rd) was closed at the town centre. Diversion took me via Spotland Rd/Sheriff St/Howard St & back to the northbound A671 (Whitworth Rd) going towards the Oxford pub. Therefore would advise all RRRs travelling to the race on Thursday to allow extra journey time."  [David Emanuel]

6th SEPTEMBER 2015
IT MAY SEEM a long way off, but with work Christmas parties etc already starting to get booked, this is probably a good time for a reminder of the date of the RRR Presentation Night. This year's event will again take place at Royton Band Club & is booked for Saturday 19th December.  [Bryan Lawton]

A MESSAGE FROM Sheila Phillips: "Please can you express my sincere thanks to the members of RRR (they know who they are) for their kind donations to my Rochdale 10K fundraising, both on & off-line. They helped me raise £638.75 for Springhill Hospice. Their efforts are very much appreciated." Judging by the bodyguards that Sheila had with her during the race (pictured), she must have been carrying all of that round the course with her...  [David Emanuel]

IF YOU READ THE REPORT about Colin Green & I running the Cotswold 24 Hour Race back in July & were inspired to give this type of event a try, then how about something a bit closer to home? Cannonball Events are holding their 2nd Trailblaster 12/6 hour event in Towneley Park, Burnley on 19th June 2016. Runners can enter solo, in pairs or in teams of 4 or 5, with the challenge to complete as many laps of a 5K trail loop as possible. This could be a great event to get several RRR teams involved & competing against each other! More details on the Cannonball website here.  [David Emanuel]

22nd AUGUST 2015
IF YOU FANCY seeing "Britain's most brutal race" played out on the big-screen, get yourself along to the rather wonderful Hebden Bridge Picture House on Sunday 13th September. The cinema has teamed up with the Walk & Ride Festival for a special screening of The Montane Spine Race, a documentary showing competitors battle extreme winds, snowstorms & torrential rain in this 268-mile race along the Pennine Way. There will be an introduction by directors Ellie West & Matt Green, with an audience Q&A session after the film. Doors open at 4.15pm!  [David Emanuel]

20th AUGUST 2015
EXCITING NEWS from Jason Keast for those heading for the Rochdale Half Marathon on Sunday - the Cask & Feather (1 Oldham Road, Rochdale OL16 1UA, 200 yards up Drake Street from the Regal Moon) is offering a free chip butty with the first drink purchased by all runners & spectators. Worth a visit after the race!  [David Emanuel]

DAVID ROSS, the author of a new book "Running Fitness - From 5K to Full Marathon" has been in touch with our Chairman to talk to him about his book. Aimed at anyone from beginners to those looking to improve performance, it covers all aspects of training including warm-up & cool-down drills, speed & hill training, race pace development, recovery, cross-training & nutrition. You can check out the book in more detail on Amazon.  [David Emanuel]

13th AUGUST 2015
THE RRR PARKRUN pacing team is now well-established & helps Oldham parkrunners to new PBs on a monthly basis...but we could do with a few new volunteers, particularly some ladies! The next pacing day is planned for Saturday 22nd August, a nice warm-up for the following day's Rochdale Half Marathon. There are still a couple of slots available (20mins, 35mins & the 'blank vest' for which the time is open to negotiation). If you'd like to get involved in this or any future pacing please e-mail Dan Yarwood or reply to Dan's posts on the RRR Facebook page. Not only do you get to test your ability to run an even pace & the satisfaction of helping other runners, but you get the double bonus of another parkrun to add to your total AND a volunteer credit!  [David Emanuel]
9th AUGUST 2015
FOR THE BENEFIT of those who don't use Facebook...many congratulations to Jen Bloor, who ran a superb 18:39 at the Sale Sizzler 5K on 6th August. This is an incredible 44 seconds faster than Carole Madden's current club record, set at the Ian Casey Memorial Race in 2011. Unfortunately, club records are based on performances in RRR Club Championship races only - brilliant as Brian Moore is, even he can't monitor performances in every race. So now Jen has shown she can run this fast she'll just have to repeat the feat in a club race...although it's probably asking a lot to do so at the Brownhouse Reservoir Race next month!  [David Emanuel]

1st AUGUST 2015
WITH SEEMINGLY more & more RRR members getting involved in 'ultra' running events, I think it's time we started acknowledging their efforts a bit more! Therefore I'm now going to start highlighting those who are planning to run ultras alongside the more 'conventional' 26.2 milers on our Marathons page. Of course I still have to rely on people telling me about events they've got planned - so if you've got an ultra or a marathon coming up, please let me know.  [David Emanuel]

30th JULY 2015
IF A SINGLE (parkrun) visit to Alexandra Park at the weekend isn't sufficient to satisfy your sporting needs, you might be interested in a Charity It's A Knockout Weekend on Sunday 30th & Monday 31st August. Organised to raise funds & awareness for The Christie at Oldham, the event is for teams of 10 people. Each team will take part on one of these two days & is required to raise a minimum of £500 (£50 per person) for The Christie. If you are interested in putting a team together please call the Appeals Office on 0161-6224366.  [David Emanuel]

23rd JULY 2015
FOR THOSE WHO haven't seen the announcement on our Facebook page...thanks to a flood of RRR entrants to the Chester Metric Marathon in particular, I've applied for & received confirmation from the race organisers that "a designated space near the starting line has been reserved for Royton Road Runners...your family & supporters are also welcome, it will be a perfect spot to bring your BBQ along for post-race celebrations". It certainly looks like a good place for spectators to watch the finish! We will of course be taking Gloria the Gazebo along & I understand that the place in 'Club Corner' also entitles our runners to complimentary pre-race nutrition & access to dedicated toilets. There's still time to enter either the full or metric marathon & be part of our team (visit the race website for more details) - as an added bonus, with a race date of Sunday 4th October, there's a full two weeks to recover for the Oldham Half!  [David Emanuel]

22nd JULY 2015
YOU MAY HAVE HEARD/READ that Colin Green & I are taking part in a 24-hour race in the Cotswolds this weekend. Seemed like a good idea a few months ago! It seems that it will be possible to get "live updates & leaderboard directly from race control at Cirencester Park" via the race website from noon on Saturday. I'm not suggesting that anyone would want to follow our progress for the whole 24 hours, but you might want to dip in every now & then to see how much we're suffering...  [David Emanuel]

11th JULY 2015
JUST ADDED another great set of pictures to the Photo Gallery from the Royton Trail, taken by Jen Grace. Along with those taken by Gary Gloster & already loaded to the Gallery (a couple of which made it into Friday's Oldham Chronicle), this must be the best collection we've ever had - more than 800 fantastic mementos from a record-breaking race. I've also added Jen's website to our Links page.  [David Emanuel]

9th JULY 2015
I MENTIONED ON THIS PAGE recently (see 29th June News below) a new book by Ed Caesar...so it's exciting to hear that the author will be at Up & Running in Manchester (133 Deansgate) between 5-7pm on Wednesday 22nd July. Caesar will be holding a Q&A as well as signing copies of Two Hours: The Quest To Run The Impossible Marathon. Entry is free & there's a prize draw to win a signed copy of the book. Almost worth missing a track session...  [David Emanuel]

6th JULY 2015

THINKING OF RUNNING the Chester Marathon (or Metric Marathon) on 4th October? If we can get 10 RRR entrants then we could qualify for the new 'Club Corner' - with a designated space on the finishing straight for Gloria the Gazebo (perfect for friends & family to see you finish), dedicated toilets (avoiding the longer queues!) & complimentary pre-race nutrition. Please let me know if you've entered (or are planning to enter) & I'll do the rest!  [David Emanuel]

A COUPLE of very early dates for your 2016 diary! The Northern Athletics 12 & 6 stage road relays - in which we competed so well on our debut in the event at Sefton Park, Liverpool earlier this year - will take place in Woodbank Park, Stockport on 2nd April 2016. I'm sure our Team Captains Kirsty & Shane will be looking to get even more people involved in this event. Just one week later it's the Greater Manchester Marathon on 10th April 2016, where hopefully we'll have our usual Drinks Station as well as many RRRs taking part. Interesting to note that there's a 2-week gap between this & the London Marathon on 24th April, which will no doubt encourage a few more people to attempt both!  [David Emanuel]

1st JULY 2015
BRIAN MOORE has highlighted a statement published by UK Athletics recently which outlines the organisation's position in relation to use of supplements. Whilst perhaps aimed primarily at elite athletes, these guidelines apply to all UKA members, including us! If nothing else, there's a useful link to the IAAF Practical Guide to Nutrition for Athletics (same page) which contains comprehensive recommendations for diet & hydration, including specific advice for distance runners. Worth a look!  [David Emanuel]

29th JUNE 2015
AN INTERESTING ARTICLE in Saturday's Guardian (actually an edited extract from a book by Ed Caesar due out next month) about the pursuit of the sub-two hour marathon. Touches on a number of issues, ranging from the reason that world records are usually improved by only incremental amounts to the inevitable speculation about drug use amongst elite endurance athletes. Well worth a read!  [David Emanuel]

13th JUNE 2015
WELL I GUESS the weather put paid to any chance of us breaking the Oldham attendance record at today's RRR parkrun day, but you can't have everything! Many thanks to all the RRRs who turned up to run or support, to all those who baked (or bought) a cake, to Dan Yarwood for saying that he liked my fruit cake, to Mark Oliver for taking the photos, to all those who helped assemble Gloria the Gazebo before the start, to Scott Woodhead for the loan of the table, to Neil Brock for the use of his penknife (after some idiot forgot to take anything to cut the cakes) & to Simon Lake, Simon Howard & Beth Howard for staying on to help pack Gloria away & help carry her to my car. The cake donations raised a handy £67.87 for our Charity of the Year, Oldham Mountain Rescue - thanks to everyone for your generous contributions!  [David Emanuel]

ONE FINAL ACT to mark RRR parkrun day...I've just created a new RRR Parkrun Gallery to celebrate our club's support for these wonderful events. I've kicked it off with one of Marl Oliver's pictures from Oldham parkrun today, plus pictures of Neil Brock & Eamonn Nolan at parkruns in South Africa & Australia respectively. So here's the challenge from now on: send me a picture of yourself (in RRR colours) taken at a different parkrun & I'll add it to the gallery. They don't have to be as exotic or far-flung as those of Neil & Eamonn - Heaton Park, Watergrove & Stamford Park should be included too - but we'll only include ONE photo per venue, first one received gets published! Knowing how many enthusiastic parkrun tourists we have, I'm sure most of the country will be covered by Christmas...  [David Emanuel]

11th JUNE 2015
AFTER OUR FANTASTIC contribution to the Northern Athletics Road Relays in March - 48 RRR athletes took part, bettered by just one other club - our Team Captains Shane & Kirsty have now decided on our next relay event, the North West Counties Road Relay Championships. This was the club's first ever relay event last year, when we took four teams to Stockport (you can read how we got on in last year's race report). This year's event will take place at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk on Saturday 12th September - full event details can be found here. Teams are made up of 3 women or 4 men, each person running 5K. It's only two days after the Bryan Lawton Brownhouse Reservoir Race, which is in the club championship, but I'm sure most of us can cope with two 5Ks in quick succession! If you'd like to be part of our relay squad for this event please let me know as soon as possible.  [David Emanuel]

9th JUNE 2015
AN E-MAIL HAS BEEN SENT to all RRR members today, so there's no escape...but this is your final invite to RRR parkrun day! We really hope that you can join us at 9am this Saturday 13th June in Alexandra Park. We're hoping to smash the attendance record we helped set last year, so if you've been thinking about bringing any friends or family along to try parkrun, this would be a great time to do so. As an added incentive, to celebrate the fact that 13th June is (almost exactly) 221 years & 8 months after the death of Marie Antoinette, we've decided to make this the RRR 'let them eat cake' parkrun day. Club members (or anyone else for that matter) are invited to come armed with a cake you've made (or bought). At the finish, runners will be invited to sample your wares in exchange for a donation to our Charity of the Year, Oldham Mountain Rescue. If you've not previously taken part in parkrun (which is a completely free event) please make sure you register first - it will only take a minute of your time.

As always there will be some people who can't make it on Saturday because of other commitments...BUT if you're injured or otherwise unable to run there are quite a few volunteer roles available, so you can still be involved. Or if Saturday morning is always the time for your long run, why not choose a route that takes you into Alexandra Park just before 9am? Or if you're planning to take part in the Rochdale 3-Day Event, Saturday's multi-terrain race doesn't start until 11am & we had some fine examples last year (Neil Brock, Gary Smith & Jason Keast as I recall) to prove that a gentle jog around the parkrun course is the perfect warm-up for that race. If none of these options appeal, please just come along & support your fellow club members; I bet you bake a delicious cake too! The RRR pacing team will also be out in force, as always helping many runners achieve new PBs. I believe there are still some pacing vests available - if you'd like to be involved please check out the RRR Facebook page or e-mail Dan Yarwood. If you have any questions about parkrun day, please let me know. Look forward to seeing you on Saturday (with cake)!  [David Emanuel]
30th MAY 2015
IT'S A BIT EARLY to be announcing races in 2016...but I think it's justified on this occasion! Andy O'Sullivan is adding a new race to his roster in recognition of the contribution to athletics of two local runners - in this case our very own Ray Shaw & June Allingan. A very well-deserved honour. Race details here.  [David Emanuel]

20th MAY 2015
HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? It's now less than a month until RRR parkrun day on Saturday 13th June. As you hopefully know by now, to celebrate the fact that this date is (almost exactly) 221 years & 8 months after the death of Marie Antoinette we've decided to make it the RRR 'let them eat cake' parkrun day. Club members (or anyone else for that matter) are invited to come along to Oldham parkrun on 13th June with a cake you've made (or bought). At the finish runners will be invited to sample your wares in exchange for a donation to our Charity of the Year, Oldham Mountain Rescue. Please come along & bring your family & friends - we're aiming to beat the current Oldham attendance record of 215, which was set at our first parkrun day last year!  [David Emanuel]

TALKING OF Oldham parkrun...as is now becoming the tradition, the draw for the Third Round of the RRR Cup will take place in the Boathouse Cafe on Saturday 30th May, after that morning's event. Hope to see you there!  [David Emanuel]

YOU MAY BE familiar with this already, but I've just happened across a clever little tool on the My Asics website. If you're not sure where to start in putting a training plan together, or looking for a fresh approach, this might be worth a try! It uses basic information - your age, gender, a current race time & (if you wish) a target event & time - to provide a simple plan split into 'Pre-Conditioning', 'Getting Faster', 'Race simulation', 'Preparation & Race' & 'Recovery' phases. You can then make adjustments to this plan as you wish. What I quite like is that all schedules appear to be based on a maximum 4 runs per week, which is more practical (for most of us) than many other training plans I've seen.  [David Emanuel]

19th MAY 2015

WITH THE ROYTON TRAIL RACE only six weeks away, it is time once again to assemble a crack team of volunteers to marshal the course. If you are not running the race, please can you let me know if you are up for a spot of marshaling; likewise if you are one of the many RRRs planning to run & have a family member who is happy to help out, please let me know.  [Bryan Lawton]

ON THURSDAY 21st MAY I'm organising a recce run of the Dovestone Diamond race route for anyone interested. This is for anybody from any training group & I promise nobody will be left behind! Please meet round the back of Tanners Mill, Greenfield at 6.45pm to set off running at 7.00pm. I would suggest wearing trail shoes if people have got them. Please could you let me know if you are coming along, then I have a rough idea who's turning up.  [Simon Howard]

A NEW TILL has been installed at Royton Cricket Club, where members can get a discount on their drinks. If any runner wishes to take advantage of this, please ask at the bar for a swipe card.  [David Emanuel]
8th MAY 2015

HE MAY HAVE gone undercover - pictured in shades & under an assumed name (very close to his real one) - but I'm pretty sure I know this week's parkrunner of the week! Good to see he managed to sneak in a plug for RRR...  [David Emanuel]

GOOD NEWS from our Treasurer Mark Taylor - we've just received a donation of £600 from the Greater Manchester Marathon team at XtraMile Events, in recognition of our efforts on the RRR Drinks Station at this year's race. That's a 20% increase on what we received last year. Thanks once again to Mary Freer & all the volunteers - this is a great reward for all your hard work.  [David Emanuel]

26th APRIL 2015

THIS EXCITING MARATHON RUNNING is all well & good, but don't forget that this summer, for the first time in many years, you have the chance to run a half marathon in Rochdale...with the opportunity to earn RRR club championship points to boot! The Rochdale Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 23rd August, with a 10K & fun run on the same day. As a new event there's no way of knowing if (or how quickly) it will fill up - so if you plan to take part, I wouldn't leave it too long before getting yourself entered. More details & registration via the Cannonball Events website here.  [David Emanuel]

16th APRIL 2015

THANKS TO RAY SHAW for forwarding on details of discounts on offer from Sports Tours International. This includes 'early bird' savings on entry fees for the We Love Manchester 10K (12th July), City of Salford 10K (6th September), Grand 10K Run at Aintree (20th September) & Tour of Tameside (19th-21st June). Just follow the links for more info!  [David Emanuel]

9th APRIL 2015

THE GREATER MANCHESTER MARATHON is only 10 days away! This must be quite exciting for all the RRRs taking part in the race, but not as much as it is for those preparing to man (or woman) the club's official Drinks Station for the 4th successive year. Our new commanding officer Mary Freer this week attended a briefing & has sent an update e-mail to all the club members who registered as official volunteers earlier in the year. If you haven't received that e-mail, please contact Mary to let her know.  [David Emanuel]

I'VE MENTIONED the 'test event' for the new Stamford Park parkrun previously (scroll down to 18th March 'News' below)...now Dan Yarwood has revealed that the official start date is 2nd May. Looks like an interesting 2-lapper, although the course description includes the words "climb the steps" & "continue up the hill". So 18th April looks like a good opportunity for a sneak preview!  [David Emanuel]

6th APRIL 2015

A COUPLE OF Andy O'Sullivan races that deserve our support, even if they're not in the RRR Club Championship: this coming Wednesday 8th April it's the Joe Salt Memorial 5K at Cowm Reservoir, 7pm start. Joe's contribution to local athletics is the stuff of legend & there's sure to be a great turnout as usual. September's Ron Hill Birthday 5K is very different this year - it's on a Saturday (26th September) for a start & a combination of road & trail. Entries are now open & it's sure to fill up quickly, so don't leave it too late if you want to take part. Could be a nice warm-up for the Swinton 10 the following day!  [David Emanuel]

5th APRIL 2015

IF YOU MISSED June Allingan's Quiz Night on 1st April because I was so late announcing it, don't despair! June is hosting another quiz on Tuesday 21st April at Springhead Liberal Club, Oldham Road, Springhead. The quiz starts at 8.30pm & once again it is being held in aid of Oldham Mountain Rescue & Parkinsons.  [David Emanuel]

31st MARCH 2015

A MESSAGE from RRR Lady Presidentess June Allingan: "I am hosting a Quiz Night at Moorside Cricket & Bowling Club, Turf Pit Lane, Moorside OL4 2ND on Wednesday 1st April 2015. 8pm start. Cost is £3 per person, all in aid of Oldham Mountain Rescue & Parkinsons (Oldham), or please visit my Virgin Money Giving webpage." If you're running the Littleborough 5K, go quickly enough & you can probably just make it for the first round of questions....  [David Emanuel]

25th MARCH 2015

Delighted to report that, in our first ever involvement in this event, we're the only club to have entered four ladies teams! Team Captain Kirsty White's selections are shown below in full. 24th MARCH 2015

AFTER THE EXCITEMENT last time (as Dan Yarwood has said, "You could cut the tension with a cake knife"), we will again be holding the draw for the 2nd Round of the RRR Cup in the Boathouse Cafe in Alexandra Park. The draw will take place after Oldham parkrun on Easter Saturday 4th April, when the final First Round matches are due to take place (sorry Nefa!). You'll no doubt be delighted to know that Brian Moore's miniature bingo machine will once again play a key role.  [David Emanuel]

20th MARCH 2015

FOLLOWING ON from the recent news of the immensely tedious multi-lap HK Ultramarathon (see 3rd March news below)...if you happen to be in Oregon on September 13th this year, you really must stop off to take part in the Boring Marathon. Although if that sounds too much there are other options - the town of Boring is also hosting the Half-Boring Half Marathon, Ultra Boring Ultra Marathon (50K), Really Boring Relay & Not Even Close To Boring 5K on the same day, all under the strapline "Go for a Boring Run". Boring is - of course - twinned with the village of Dull in the Scottish Highlands, while the two have recently teamed up with a farm community in New South Wales, Australia to form a "League of Extraordinary Communities". The name of that place? Bland.  [David Emanuel]

19th MARCH 2015

IF YOU HAVEN'T got Saturday 13th June circled in your diary already...then get circling now! To celebrate the fact that this date is (almost exactly) 221 years & 8 months after the death of Marie Antoinette, we've decided to make it RRR 'let them eat cake' parkrun day! Admittedly it's now considered very doubtful that Ms Antoinette ever actually said those words, but it's a little-known fact that she was one of the best running Queens of the 18th century, despite wearing those rather cumbersome dresses. Anyway, we're asking all RRRs to come along to Oldham parkrun on 13th June with a cake you've baked (or bought). At the finish runners will be invited to sample your wares in exchange for donations to our Charity of the Year, Oldham Mountain Rescue. Please join us & bring your friends!  [David Emanuel]

18th MARCH 2015

DAN YARWOOD (nice chap, likes a good bandana & possibly a banana) has been in touch with information about a new parkrun starting soon in Stamford Park, between Ashton-under-Lyne & Stalybridge. Although the official start date is top secret, a 'test event' is taking place on Saturday 18th April at 12pm. It would be great to have some RRRs along - the 12pm start means you can still get your regular parkrun 'fix' in the morning if you wish. Might be a good opportunity for those who have volunteered for the RRR Manchester Marathon Drinks Station on Sunday 19th April & will thus be missing out on a regular Sunday run!  [David Emanuel]

IN MORE TAMESIDE RUNNING NEWS...it's great to hear that the legendary Tour of Tameside is set to return in June after an absence of more than 10 years. The bad news is that it clashes with both the the Milltown Oldham 10K & Trail Marathon Wales, so that rules most of us out! Just like the Wagon Wheel it's half the size it used to be - the equivalent of a marathon over 3 days rather than the old 'double marathon in a week'. Starting with a 6-mile fell race from Copley Leisure Centre in Stalybridge on Friday 19th June, the Tour continues with a half marathon on the Longdendale Trail on Saturday 20th (dedicated to PC Nicola Hughes) & finishes with a 7-mile road race around Hyde on Sunday 21st. Subject to numbers it may be possible later to enter the individual races rather than the whole series. More details here. Maybe next year...  [David Emanuel]

11th MARCH 2015

DON'T FORGET to renew your RRR membership! The £42 annual fee for existing members, to cover the club year to March 2016, is due by 31st March 2015 at the latest. See the Membership Renewal page for ways to pay, including by online transfer.  [David Emanuel]

MORE DETAILS have been announced about the new Rochdale Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 23rd August & is included in the RRR Club Championship for 2015. Additional details include the route, start time & a nice picture of our very own Russell Ingham on the website! Entries can now be made via the same link. You may also be interested in this extra snippet I've received today from Race Director John Lloyd: "We are doing a 'free place when you bring a marshal' scenario. Basically you give me details of a marshal, I liaise with them and when they have confirmed their commitment and know their role the runner gets a free place in the 10K or half price code off the half." Time to find someone who's prepared to stand on a Rochdale street corner for a few hours in August...  [David Emanuel]

5th MARCH 2015

AS IF the chance to see one RRR performing live this weekend wasn't enough (see the news below about Liz Phillips in Lees on Sunday), you can also see Chris Eavers & his band Ransom at the Queen Anne Inn, Shaw on the evening of Saturday 7th March. I've mentioned the gig here before, but the start time has now changed to 8.30pm. Although this could just be a shameless attempt to get me to give them another plug...plus I'm sure nobody would complain if you turned up a bit earlier & got a few drinks in beforehand!  [David Emanuel]

3rd MARCH 2015

EXCITING CLUB RACE news - we've now reached 100 RRRs registered for the Royton Trail in July! But if you haven't yet signed up, don't think that means we'll stop pestering you...to make sure that we get 100 finishers we need a few extra in case of injury. It's a great race & still only costs £5, so enter now via the Royton Trail page on this website! Meanwhile there's still time to book a seat on the RRR coach for the legendary trip to the Dentdale Run on 14th March, but you'll need to act quickly - put your name on the list at the club or send an e-mail now! Then after Dentdale it's the first of the three Littleborough 5K races - don't miss out on the special RRR discount for online entry!  [David Emanuel]

THIS COMING SUNDAY 8th March, 2.30pm at Zion Methodist Church in Lees, what better way to relax after a morning run than to come along & listen to the thrilling voice of our own Elizabeth Phillips performing in a Springtime 'Diva' Concert? Admission £6 including refreshments. Proceeds to church funds.  [June Allingan]

THINKING OF ENTERING the Great Manchester Run on 10th May this year? If so, you'll no doubt be interested in this competition organised by thinkmoney. They're offering five lucky winners a goody bag from Hilly (worth over £80) plus free entry into the race (£38). Closing date is 22nd March, so don't think about it for too long! As it happens the race organisers have also been in touch to say that 16 RRRs (9 men & 6 women) have already entered...apparently if one more female club member enters then we'll qualify for the Great Run Club Challenge. One of the prizes on offer is a trip to the Great Ethiopian Run in November!  [David Emanuel]

THOSE OF YOU who enjoy longer-distance races might like to consider the HK Ultramarathon for next year. Then again, maybe you won't. The race, Hong Kong's first inner-city ultramarathon, involved competitors running 50K (31 miles) by covering the same stretch of road 25 times. You have to admire the honesty of Kwan Kee, chairman of the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, who conceded that the course was "quite boring...[but] land in Hong Kong is very limited...".  [David Emanuel]

1st MARCH 2015

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY...after the two previous successful events, we're planning to hold another RRR parkrun day at Alexandra Park, Oldham on Saturday 13th June. If you've not attended before, it's just like a normal parkrun but with a guest appearance by Gloria the Gazebo! It's really just a way of trying to encourage as many RRRs as possible to come together on a Saturday morning, especially those who haven't tried parkrun before. It's also a great opportunity to invite along friends & family to join the parkrun experience. This time we're introducing an added incentive - we'll be asking you to bake/bring cakes for the runners to sample at the finish in exchange for donations to our Charity of the Year, Oldham Mountain Rescue. Judging by our Facebook page many RRRs are obsessed with all things cake-related, so that should guarantee a good turnout!  [David Emanuel]

25th FEBRUARY 2015

WE'RE GETTING CLOSE! The latest figures indicate that 91 RRRs have now entered the Royton Trail. That's already set to be a new record...but surely we can make it a nice round 100? Online entry can be accessed via the Royton Trail page on this website.  [David Emanuel]

22nd FEBRUARY 2015

FOR THOSE who haven't seen the messages on Facebook, this year's Dovestone Diamond race has sold out in record time. Great news for Colin Green, not so much if you've missed the opportunity to get your entry in. All is not lost, however - if you send an e-mail to Colin at Greenfield Greyhounds you will be placed on a waiting list to replace anyone who drops out. Don't wait too long!  [David Emanuel]

COACH DETAILS for the Dent trip on Saturday 14th March have been confirmed today by Bernie Goodwin. Departure from the old Assembly Hall car park in Royton at 9am prompt, returning at 8.30pm. A list will go up at the club on Monday, but if you prefer just send me an e-mail & I'll get you added to the list. Thoroughly recommend this - it's a great trip, good race & surely can't be as cold as it was at Blackpool today!  [David Emanuel]

MORE DETAILS have been announced for the Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships at Sefton Park, Liverpool on Saturday 28th March. The men's event will consist of four legs of 4.9 miles, eight legs of 2.8 miles, with the ladies running the same distances for two 'long legs' & four 'short legs'. The ladies in our fabulous FOUR teams should already have received an e-mail (sent on 13th February) confirming that they've been selected; I hope to be able to send something similar to the men very soon!  [David Emanuel]

21st FEBRUARY 2015

MANY THANKS to everyone who came along to take part in the annual RRR Quiz Night. 11 teams took part in an excellent quiz, hosted by Club Chairman Bryan Lawton, which ended with team Quiz Akabusi finishing just ahead of The Presidential Party & a team from our Charity of the Year, Oldham Mountain Rescue. Barely a note of controversy either, apart from when the quizmaster tried to claim that the Great North Run finishes in Gateshead, even though he's crossed the line himself in South Shields on numerous occasions. With typically generous purchasing of tickets, the raffle raised £120 as our first donation of the year to OMRT. Well done all!  [David Emanuel]

12th FEBRUARY 2015

NOT ENTERED A TEAM for the RRR Quiz Night yet? Well there's still time to correct this terrible oversight! It's a mere £5 per person for teams of up to six people (which includes supper) & all takes place at Royton Cricket Club on Friday 20th February (7.30pm for an 8pm start). Just send an e-mail to Bryan Lawton to let him know how many will be in your team (all welcome, including non-runners), to help make sure we get the food order right.  [David Emanuel]

FINAL CALL for anyone wanting tickets to either of the upcoming cross-country presentation nights! The Red Rose event takes place on Friday 27th February & can be obtained direct from Mrs J Simpson (RR), 5 Sheaf Field Walk, Radcliffe, Manchester M26 4DD (send a cheque & SAE). The South East Lancs evening, which will hopefully see our ladies team crowned as champions (I hope they do actually get crowns), is on Friday 13th March & you need to let me know as soon as possible if you want to go. Both events take place at Horwich RMI Club & tickets are £3 each.  [David Emanuel]

WORD REACHES RRR TOWERS that a number of RRRs will be heading over to Littleborough on Saturday for the Windy Hill Fell Race. Good luck to you all! The race is rated as a "partially marked...suitable introduction to fell running" with full FRA kit requirements. So this is probably a good time to check/remind yourself of exactly what those requirements are - see the Fell Race Grand Prix page of our website for details. If you don't have the correct kit you won't be allowed to run! [David Emanuel]

11th FEBRUARY 2015

LADIES CHANGING ROOM UPDATE: work is getting underway this week, with painting due to start on Thursday. Once that is finished the doors will be replaced, seats re-covered & new carpet tiles fitted. Hopefully all will be completed soon - please try to avoid any wet paint in the meantime!  [David Emanuel]

7th FEBRUARY 2015

THANKS to all the RRRs who came along to the AGM on Friday night! A good, productive meeting & nothing contentious to report! Main news is that the members present approved an increase in the first-claim membership fee to £42 to reflect the £2 increase introduced by England Athletics. Fees are due by 31st March - see the Membership Renewal page for details. We had an update on the work being carried out to improve the condition of the ladies changing room, a request for improved lighting in the car park on training nights (which will be raised with the cricket club) & a brief talk from Peter Hyde, a representative of our 2015 club charity the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team. Peter expressed his thanks for our support & explained how valuable our fundraising efforts will be. OMRT are hoping to send a team along to the RRR Quiz Night on 20th February (see 19th January news below - don't forget to let Bryan Lawton know if you'll be bringing a team along!). We were also told about the developments with the Base Group at training nights & it was emphasised how important this group is as the 'front door' for new members. Although there were several volunteers on the night, Mary Freer is still looking for more members from other training groups to volunteer to run with this group on a rota basis every 4-8 weeks (this was nicely compared, I thought, to the pacing activity we are involved in at Oldham parkrun). If you'd like to help out, please contact Mary by e-mail.  [David Emanuel]

JASON KEAST has been in touch to let us know that our very own Chris Eavers & his band Ransom - legendary performers at many an RRR Presentation Night - are playing at Jason's brother's pub on 7th March. That's the Queen Anne Inn, Church Road, Shaw (OL2 7AU) & the band are performing from 7pm. It's not a club race weekend, so no excuses...I'm sure Chris would welcome the sight of many RRR faces in the crowd!  [David Emanuel]

THE COMMITTEE are wanting to clarify about the groups you've been allocated to in this years championship. The most important message is that these are not set in tablets of stone. So as to have a fair competition for all, anyone who is clearly running at a level above the group they're placed in can be moved. Discretion has to play a part in any decision-making to ensure that, as far as is possible, it is fair for all and that placement decision will be made by the committee. The definition of "clearly running above" that I'll be using is (for example) ...

A runner in Group 4 runs a 10K race and not only runs a time that is quicker than their Group 4 target 10K time (47:51 to 52:01) it is a time that would place them significantly high up in the next group. In this example, say a low 46 10K, a time close to the "fast-end" of the Group 3 10K target time.

We'll use the first couple of races to determine these runners, this is the same as we would do for new members, after which it's highly unlikely they'll be moved.

On a fantastically positive note, we've already had a number of runners contacting us with evidence of times to move them up a group and asking to be done so ... fair play to them.

Hope this makes the situation clear. [Brian Moore]

5th FEBRUARY 2015

MANY THANKS for all the comments & feedback on the new 2015 group structure - I'm surprised Facebook didn't grind to a halt last night! I'm sure there'll be a few tweaks over the next few weeks as we take into account people's non-club races, we're already receiving information on these. In the meantime one thing we can do straight away is make the time thresholds a bit clearer. The attached revised version shows instead the 'time bands' that define all groups from Championship to Group 5. Hope this helps!  [David Emanuel]

THANKS TO EVERYONE who attended the Base Group meeting on Monday. It seems we had two issues that needed sorting - group leaders & keeping the group at its advertised pace. Thanks to the many who volunteered to lead & help support the new leaders. It has been decided that the group will have to keep to the 11:00-11:30 pace to keep everyone's quality of training to expected levels. There are a number of options for anyone returning from a break in their training if they feel 6 miles at this pace is a little daunting - we have two track sessions a week & a strong club presence at Oldham parkrun with regular paced runs. Members are also always welcome to join Monday's Run England sessions. If you are willing to volunteer to join the Base Group leader rota please send me an e-mail. I'll get a rota going with Eloise's help. Any questions please let me know.  [Mary Freer]

3rd FEBRUARY 2015

IT'S THAT EXCITING TIME of year when we announce the RRR Championship Groups for 2015! There was clearly a need for change, as the rapid growth in membership had resulted in some very large groups and, more significantly, groups that contained a wide range of abilities.

The RRR Committee has decided to do two things: first, to add three more groups, increasing the total number to eight; and secondly, to assign each group a set of 'threshold' times for each of the standard race distances (5K, 10K, 10 mile & half marathon). As you'll see from the attached file, existing members have been assigned to a group based on their best performance in a Club Championship race in 2014. This should mean that all of the groups contain runners of a broadly similar standard & therefore be much more competitive. If you can't see your name it's because you joined recently or didn't complete a club race last year - in which case you'll be added to an appropriate group after your first few club races of 2015, based on your performance against these thresholds. Some of the groups may look quite small at the moment, but there are a lot of new & returning members yet to be added!

The competition itself will work exactly the same as before - points will be allocated according to performances in the 17 club races selected this year (best 9 to count), with the top three runners in each group winning a prize. But you now have something else to aim for - you can see exactly what threshold time you need to achieve (in at least one race) to remain in your assigned group in 2016...although since you're a Royton Road Runner, I'm pretty sure that you're already looking to see what time you need to achieve to move up to the next level!

Although group allocation has initially been based on Club Championship races, we will accept results from other England Athletics-recognised events (including parkrun) as achievement of a threshold performance. All you'll need to do is send us a link to the race results as evidence.

If you have any feedback on this new group structure (I'm sure we'll get plenty at the AGM on Friday!), please send an e-mail or join the discussion on the RRR Facebook page.  [David Emanuel]

1st FEBRUARY 2015

TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE for the South East Lancs Cross-Country Presentation Night. Unfortunately the event takes place on Friday 13th March, the night before our annual trip north for the Dentdale Run...but it costs only £3 a head (including disco, raffle & supper) & RRR will be picking up some silverware! Venue is Horwich RMI Club, 7.30pm for presentation at 8.15pm. Tickets are limited so please let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to attend.  [David Emanuel]

22nd JANUARY 2015

REMEMBER that questionnaire I asked you to complete over the Christmas break? It included a question about your running targets for 2015, based on the theory that writing down & sharing your goals makes it more likely that you will achieve them. An impressive 60 of you took up the challenge, including many of our newer recruits. I promised that I'd publish them on the website - so here they are! A fascinating range of targets from the very specific to the more general to the cruel ("Keep beating Mo until he cries" - guess who?) to the completely unrealistic ("To beat Brian Moore"). We'll revisit these at the end of the year & see how everyone got on.  [David Emanuel]

19th JANUARY 2015

DETAILS OF THE RRR QUIZ NIGHT on Friday 20th February are being finalised, so it's time to register your team! The event will take place at Royton Cricket Club (7.30pm for an 8 o'clock start), costing £5 per person in teams of a maximum six people - that price includes supper. Please send an e-mail to Bryan Lawton to confirm your interest, with approximate numbers in your team, to help us with the catering.  [David Emanuel]

MANY THANKS to everyone who has volunteered to help out on the (legendary) RRR Drinks Station at the Greater Manchester Marathon in April. Mary Freer has confirmed that we now have a full complement of volunteers, so registrations are closed. I'm sure that Mary will be in touch with all volunteers during the build-up to the event to confirm arrangements & I'll share any messages here when required. Watch this space!  [David Emanuel}

15th JANUARY 2015

INTERESTED IN TRAVELLING on the RRR coach to the Mad Dog 10K in Southport on Sunday 8th February? We need an idea of numbers pretty quickly! Please add your name to the list which will go up at the club on Monday 19th January - or if you prefer just send me an e-mail & I'll let Bernie Goodwin know.  [David Emanuel]

WE'RE STILL SEEKING more volunteers to join the RRR team on our Greater Manchester Marathon Drinks Station on Sunday 19th April. If you're not taking part in the race, this is the next best way to be involved! There's always a great atmosphere & it's a wonderful way to support our runners & indeed everyone taking part. All you need to do is register on the GMM race website - click the 'Drinks Station Marshal' option & enter the Group Code 'RRR2015' - then let our Drinks Station Leader Mary Freer know that you've signed up, either by a DM on Facebook or by e-mail, including your e-mail address. Look forward to seeing you there!  [David Emanuel]

10th JANUARY 2015

HERE'S AN EARLY DATE for your diary! To ensure that we got in quickly to secure the room, the 2015 RRR Presentation Night has been booked for Saturday 19th December. Tickets available...at some point in the distant future.  [David Emanuel]

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE turnout for the 2nd RRR parkrun day at Oldham this morning! The weather certainly wasn't kind to us - we even had to put Gloria the Gazebo up under cover of the Lion's Den - but the 212 finishers is the second-best ever at Oldham in 230 events, beaten only by the original RRR parkrun day last June. To get within three runners of the record in today's conditions was fantastic. Difficult to be precise on the number of RRRs in that total, as not everyone is (yet) registered as a club member, but I make it at least 57. Thanks to everyone who made the effort, including the supporters who came out to cheer us on. After the run a number of us retired to the cafe to make the First Round draw for the 2015 RRR Cup - an event that will live long in the memory of everyone who witnessed Brian Moore's bingo balls in action. The full draw will be published on the RRR Cup page as soon as possible! [David Emanuel]

LOOKING FOR a new marathon to try this autumn? Well look no longer! The Hull Marathon on Sunday 13th September promises a fast, flat course taking in iconic local landmarks & some great weekend accommodation packages. It even has its own video. Just follow the links to find out  more.  [David Emanuel]

7th JANUARY 2015

A COUPLE OF DATES for your diary...the RRR Annual General Meeting will take place on Friday 6th February 2015 at Royton Cricket Club. As the club membership continues to grow, don't miss the chance to have your say on how we operate! If you have any items that you wish to put on the agenda, please send them by e-mail no later than 30th January. Then on Friday 20th February the same venue will play host to the popular RRR Quiz Night. As is traditional, last year's winning team (led by Bryan Lawton) become quizmasters this time around. More details closer to the time!  [David Emanuel]

Our celebrity marathon runner David Leyland has received his Project 26.2 training plan from Martin Yelling (former GB athlete & husband of Olympic marathon runner Liz). David generously offered to share this plan with other RRRs, suggesting it "might be of interest as a baseline for other first-time marathoners looking to finish around 4:30, to adapt/tweak/ignore as they see fit". Click here for full details.  [David Emanuel]

1st JANUARY 2015

HAPPY NEW YEARRR! And what better way to start planning your running year than signing up for the RRR Cup 2015 & putting your name forward for the road relays in March? I'd be really grateful if you would visit this page & complete a brief form to confirm your interest in either (or hopefully both) of these events. The form also asskes you to share your main running goal for next year - I'll be publishing all of these later!  [David Emanuel]

ONE RRR who has already gone very public with his running goal for 2015 is David Leyland. As you may already know, David has been selected to join Project 26.2 2015 organised by Men's Running magazine. The first articles can now be viewed on the magazine's website - including the first of what I'm sure will be many mentions of our club!  [David Emanuel]
